Local youth fitness expert, Mark Stainthorpe, recently announced The Gym?s launch of Youth Fit Sports Camp (YFSC), Elkins Park?s first youth fitness sports camp specifically designed to combat childhood obesity, to improve youth fitness and sports performance.
Stainthorpe said, ?Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions with factors such as school budget cutbacks that have significantly reduced physical education and activity, unhealthy food choices, excessive ?screen usage?-computers, TV, and video games, all contributing to the dilemma. Currently, over 50% of our children are overweight and almost 20% are obese. Unless obesity is reduced, today?s youth will lead less healthy and shorter lives than their parents.?
?To help battle childhood obesity and to introduce kids ages 8-15 to a healthy fitness lifestyle in a safe, fun, non-intimidating format,? Stainthorpe remarked. ?We?re elated to begin offering an effective youth fitness and sports program in the Elkins Park area.?
Stainthorpe says that providing youth fitness programming is a natural extension of The Gym?s commitment to the community: ?We have always been committed to offering quality programs and services to our community such as The Gym?s adult Elkins Park Boot Camp in 2011, so offering this much needed program for the children of our adult Boot Camp was a no-brainer.?
?It?s unfortunate that there are so many unhealthy children. The vast majority of kids today have sedentary lifestyles, even if they are participating in limited sports activities.? Stainthorpe commented that ?YFSC?s Group Fitness Programs will engage children to start moving again and are designed with their safety and fun in mind; if it?s not fun, your children are not going to stick with it.?
