While the international community has loudly condemned the latest power grab, Bissau-Guineans have had little time to mourn yet another aborted attempt at establishing democracy, worried instead by how to make ends meet during their country's latest political spasm.

A lone sign hangs from a pedestrian overpass in downtown Bissau urging: "Mobilize yourselves! Demonstrate! We are a Democracy!" Most, though, are simply doing their best just to walk across that bridge to make a living each day.

Public workers didn't receive their salaries last month on payday, just after the coup. It's still unclear whether anyone will receive their salaries for May, and the hardship compounds life for those who depend on others getting paid.

Cadidjoto Seide, 28, supports her three children by selling a local milk dish along the roadside. In the months before the coup, she could sometimes make up to 5,000 francs ($10) a day, though much of that would go toward her transport costs. Since the coup, she's lucky to make 1,500 ($3), she says.

"It's really difficult at the moment just to survive," she says, watching commuter buses whirl by her stand in the main market downtown.

The April coup began on a Friday afternoon, just 17 days before the country's runoff election. The first round of voting had largely been described as free and fair, and former Prime Minister Carlos Gomes Jr. was leading by a wide margin, making his victory all but sure. By the night of April 12, the military had blocked off the roads to the candidate's house, and were lobbing grenades at his villa.

Now Gomes has fled the country, and it appears less likely each day that he will ever return.

The country's chances of ridding itself of military intervention are slim, given a booming cocaine trade that has turned Guinea-Bissau into a narcostate, fueled by trans-Atlantic drug shipments bound for Europe. Key members of the military have been named as complicit in the trade, including several army and navy chiefs who are now on the United States' "drug kingpin" list. The infusion of illicit cash has emboldened an already bloated army. Drugs, observers say, played a role in the recent coup.

"All the intelligence Portugal possesses clearly indicates that one of the factors behind the coup was drug-trafficking," Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Portas told reporters in Lisbon after meeting with Gomes, who exiled himself there.

"Either Guinea-Bissau becomes a state based on the rule of law, or it will be held ransom by a certain military clique that is open to the drug trade," said Portas.

Gomes told Portuguese radio station TSF that the international community must ostracize the coup leaders by imposing sanctions. Foreign pressure "has to be made to produce results." He added that he had unofficial information that a coup was brewing, but armed forces chiefs "categorically denied" they were planning an uprising when he confronted them. He added that he was not afraid to return to Bissau, but more than six weeks after the coup, the candidate is still an ocean away.

The election was clearly a vote some did not want him to win. Observers say Gomes had become a divisive figure within national politics long before the run-up to the election. Then when military leaders feared Gomes was secretly trying to overhaul the military with help from Angolan soldiers, they burst into action and arrested him.

Even West African regional mediators are backing a one-year transitional government that does not include him in it.

Critics believe the plan by West African regional bloc ECOWAS to now support the junta-initiated transitional government all but legitimizes the military coup. But ECOWAS Commissioner Salamatu Hussaini-Suleiman, has told the U.N. Security Council that immediately restoring the constitutional order that existed before the coup could lead to civil war.

In an effort to put the country back on track, ECOWAS this month began sending a contingent of peacekeepers, who will replace the Angolan troops formerly stationed here, whose presence had become a source of conflict with the military at large.

For now, it seems that the military has gotten away once again with meddling in the country's politics. In 2009, soldiers assassinated then-president Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira, in an unsolved murder that was also rumored to have been linked to the drug trade.

There is next-to-no military presence in the streets of Bissau, which have turned to a river of red mud since the first storms of the rainy season. The army does not need to patrol the streets, because despite the posters encouraging an uprising, people are too beaten down to stand up to the latest military incursion.

In Guinea-Bissau, citizens seem willing to give the junta or a transitional government a chance ? if it means restoring some economic stability.

Carlos Hussein Ajau, 62, has lived through it all: Portuguese colonialism, the war for independence, the country's civil war and its successive coups and political assassinations. The last few weeks have been difficult for his business ? no one even has money to change.

"The situation is not good, but we in Guinea-Bissau are used to it," he says.

Maryland returns to NCAA title game

FOXOBOROUGH ? Drew Snider tied his career high with four goals and Maryland advanced to the NCAA title game for the second straight year with a 16-10 victory over third-seeded Duke on Saturday.

Owen Blye added three goals for the Terrapins (12-5), who will play in-state rival Loyola for the national title Monday. The Greyhounds held off Notre Dame 7-5 in the first semifinal.

Maryland put away the Blue Devils (15-5) with a run of six straight goals after Duke pulled to 10-8 early in the fourth quarter.

The Atlantic Coast Conference rivals split the regular-season series with both winning at home, but the Terps dominated in the most important matchup, scoring the first three goals of the game and getting more than half their shots into the net.

Maryland, which lost to Virginia 9-7 last year in the title game, finished with 29 shots and scored the most goals Duke has allowed this season.

Niko Amato made 10 saves for the Terps, who advanced to their 11th championship game.

Duke?s Dan Wigrizer allowed 13 goals before being pulled in the fourth quarter as Maryland put the game out of reach.

The Blue Devils unraveled quickly.

Robert Rotanz pulled Duke to 10-8 with an unassisted goal 2:16 into the fourth quarter. It was his second of the game and 40th of the season, but Maryland answered quickly on Snider?s goal with 12:17 left.

Blye bounced a shot past Wigrizer for his second goal of the game, putting the Terps up 12-8 with 10:09 left, then Joe Cummings added another for Maryland just 59 seconds later. It was the 31st goal of the season for Cummings, who also had three assists and leads the Terps in scoring.

Now down 13-8 minutes after pulling within two, Duke called a timeout after Cummings? goal with 9:10 left.

It didn?t help.

Duke also replaced Wigrizer in goal with Kyle Turri, who charged way out to try an intercept a pass, leaving a wide-open net for Blye?s third goal of the game, putting Maryland up 14-8 with 6:01 remaining. Turri got caught out of position again with 5:02 to go and Kevin Forster took advantage with his second goal of the game.

Sean McGuire made it 16-8 with his first goal of the season with only 2:57 remaining.

Duke finally ended the Terps? scoring run when he scored with 1:27 left as both teams sent in the reserves to finish out the game.

For the first time in more than a century, a herd of purebred Yellowstone bison are roaming in Montana. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

Fans of bison are lobbying Congress to declare America's largest land mammal the "national mammal" -- putting it right up there with the bald eagle as an American icon. But bison have their critics, as well as competition: killer whales are mammals, too, and then there's that other widespread mammal: humans.

"The North American Bison is an enduring symbol of America, its people and a way of life," Sen. Michael Enzi, R-Wyo., said in a statement Friday announcing the "National Bison Legacy Act."

"Throughout history, the bison has been the center of the economic and spiritual lives of American Indians and is an important historical symbol of the United States," added co-sponsor Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D.

They introduced the bill at the request of an alliance among the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Intertribal Buffalo Council and the National Bison Association.

Nearly 60 Yellowstone bison are back home on Montana's range, but not everyone's happy about it.

"The bison is the nation?s most culturally recognizable animal and as such deserves recognition through designation and celebration," the alliance noted.?"Bison currently appear on two state flags, on the seal of the Department of the Interior, and on U.S. currency. In addition, bison have been adopted as the state mammal of Wyoming, Oklahoma and Kansas."

Tens of millions of bison, or buffalo, once roamed North America, but the species dwindled to about 1,000 by the early 1900s. The numbers are back to an estimated 20,000 in the wild today. In addition, about 500,000 commercial bison are on 4,000 ranches.

In recent years, efforts have been made to put wild bison on more parts of the West -- including?the transfer in March of about 60 Yellowstone bison to Montana's Fort Peck Reservation.?

But the symbolic act would not provide added protections for wild bison, which have their enemies.

In Montana, The Associated Press noted, livestock producers and property advocates have filed lawsuits to stop free-roaming bison, arguing they tear down fences, spread disease and compete with domestic cattle for grass.

And Boulder, Colo., this week rebuffed billionaire Ted Turner's donation of a bison herd for public viewing. It cited?cost concerns and public opposition.

John Calvelli, spokesman for?the Wildlife Conservation Society, told the AP that the effort is meant to transcend such issues.

"This isn't about getting into the middle of these issues of bison and property rights," he said. "No matter what political stripe you come from, we can all agree on the important role that bison have played."

IUDs, implants most effective birth control

A study to evaluate birth control methods has found dramatic differences in their effectiveness. Women who used birth control pills, the patch or vaginal ring were 20 times more likely to have an unintended pregnancy than those who used longer-acting forms such as an intrauterine device (IUD) or implant.

Results of the study, by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, are reported May 24 in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Birth control pills are the most commonly used reversible contraceptive in the United States, but their effectiveness hinges on women remembering to take a pill every day and having easy access to refills.

In the study, birth-control pills and other short-term contraceptive methods, such as the contraceptive patch or ring, were especially unreliable among younger women. For those under 21 who used birth control pills, the patch or ring, the risk of unplanned pregnancy was almost twice as high as the risk among older women. This finding suggests that increased adolescent use of longer acting contraceptive methods could prevent substantially more unplanned pregnancies.

"This study is the best evidence we have that long-acting reversible methods are far superior to the birth control pill, patch and ring," says senior author Jeffrey Peipert, MD, the Robert J. Terry Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology. "IUDs and implants are more effective because women can forget about them after clinicians put the devices in place."

Unintended pregnancy is a major problem in the United States. About 3 million pregnancies per year ?50 percent of all pregnancies? are unplanned. The rate of unintended pregnancy in the United States is much higher than in other developed nations, and past studies have shown that about half of these pregnancies result from contraceptive failure.

IUDs are inserted into the uterus by a health-care provider. The hormonal IUD is approved for 5 years, and the copper IUD can be used for as long as 10 years. Hormonal implants are inserted under the skin of the upper arm and are effective for three years. Many women, however, cannot afford the up-front costs of these methods, which can be more than $500.

"We know that IUDs and implants have very low failure rates ?less than 1 percent," says Brooke Winner, MD, a fourth-year resident at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the study's lead author. "But although IUDs are very effective and have been proven safe in women and adolescents, they only are chosen by 5.5 percent of women in the United States who use contraception."

Earlier contraceptive studies asked women to recall the birth control method they used and number of pregnancies. For this study, the investigators wanted to determine whether educating women about the effectiveness of various birth- control options and having them choose a method without considering cost would reduce the rate of unintended pregnancy. Birth control was provided to women free of charge.

The study involved over 7,500 women enrolled in the Contraceptive CHOICE project. Participants were ages 14-45 and at high risk of unintended pregnancy. The women were sexually active or planned to become sexually active in the next six months. They either were not currently using contraception or wanted to switch birth control methods. The women also said they did not want to become pregnant for the next 12 months.

Participants in this report could choose among the following birth-control methods: IUD, implant, birth control pills, patch, ring and contraceptive injection. The women were counseled about the contraceptive methods, including their effectiveness, side effects, risks and benefits. Participants were permitted to discontinue or switch methods as many times as desired during the study.

Investigators interviewed participants by telephone at three and six months and every six months thereafter for the remainder of the study. During each interview, participants were asked about missed periods and possible pregnancy. Any participant who thought they might be pregnant was asked to come in for a urine pregnancy test. Those who were pregnant were asked if it was intended and what contraceptive method (if any) they were using at time of conception.

Over the course of the three-year study, 334 women became pregnant. Of these, 156 pregnancies were due to contraceptive failure. Overall, 133 (4.55 percent) of women using pills, the patch or ring had contraceptive failure, compared with 21 (0.27 percent) of women using IUDs and implants.

"This study also is important because it showed that when IUDs and implants are provided at no cost, about 75 percent of women chose these methods for birth control," Winner says.

Women who chose an IUD or implant were more likely to be older, to have public health insurance and to have more children than women who chose other contraceptive methods. Women who chose pills, the patch or ring were more likely to have private health insurance and to not have had children previously.

Peipert says the results support a shift in how patients should be counseled, which could greatly affect unintended pregnancy rates. "If there were a drug for cancer, heart disease or diabetes that was 20 times more effective, we would recommend it first," he says. "Unintended pregnancies can have negative effects on women's health and education and the health of newborns."

Yemeni troops advance; donors pledge $4 bln aid

ADEN/RIYADH (Reuters) - Yemeni government troops battled Islamist militants in two southern cities on Wednesday as international donors met in Saudi Arabia to pledge $4 billion to help stabilize a state that has become a base for al Qaeda.

Government forces recaptured parts of the strategically important city of Zinjibar and fought militants in the city of Jaar, leaving 33 militants and nine soldiers dead, officials and residents said.

The militants, who seized large swathes of southern Yemen last year, have given shelter and support to al Qaeda's regional wing, which on Monday killed 100 soldiers in a suicide bombing at a military parade in the capital Sanaa.

Western and Gulf Arab countries have watched with mounting alarm as political crisis in the impoverished Arabian Peninsula state gave al Qaeda the opportunity to develop a base from which to launch attacks around the world.

"I assert one more time our support to Yemen to back all the phases of the political initiative to help achieve security, stability and prosperity in facing the threats of extremism and terrorism," Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said in Riyadh.

The meeting in Riyadh was the first to be held by the Friends of Yemen donor group since Ali Abdullah Saleh was forced to step down as president after 33 years in February, allowing the election of a transitional head of state.

Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter, pledged $3.25 billion of the total of more than $4 billion promised in aid.

In nearly a year of protests and instability, the army split into rival factions, Islamists established military sway in the south and the economy collapsed.

"This (aid) shows the Yemeni-Saudi relationship is quite strong and Saudi Arabia is cognizant that the stability of Saudi Arabia depends on that of Yemen," Yemeni Foreign Minister Abubakr al-Qirbi said.

Almost half of Yemenis do not have enough to eat and urgent aid is needed to avert a catastrophe, a group of seven aid agencies said on Wednesday ahead of the Riyadh meeting.

GOVERNMENT ADVANCE

Authorities investigating Monday's suicide bombing captured two militants wearing explosive belts, the Interior Ministry said on its website on Wednesday. It did not say when they were captured.

The advance of Yemeni troops into the centre and northern neighborhoods of Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan province, represents a new front in a U.S.-backed offensive to reclaim areas seized by al Qaeda-linked insurgents in the south.

"The army is holding key parts of the centre and north of the city, including the stadium and government buildings, but there are still pockets of resistance," a military official said.

At least seven militants were killed and a soldier wounded in gunbattles in the town, a major prize for the insurgents when they took it last year.

Twenty-six militants and nine soldiers were killed in fighting in the insurgent-held town of Jaar, officials said.

Residents said warplanes bombed a checkpoint set up by the Islamist fighters in Abyan province's Mudiyah district. No casualties were reported. In Shaqra, two militants were killed when warplanes bombed their checkpoints, an official said.

In Sanaa, a pro-Saleh protester was killed when riot police attempted to disperse a demonstration in the capital.

Yemeni officials say U.S. military personnel have been helping to coordinate the offensive and dozens of U.S. trainers are in the country. The United States frequently carries out drone attacks on militants.

The United States and Saudi Arabia have come to regard Yemen's al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, known as AQAP, as the group's most dangerous wing. Early in May, Washington said Western and Arab intelligence agencies had foiled an AQAP plot to bring down an international airliner with a bomb.

$4 BILLION AID

Riyadh, which provides oil and military aid to its impoverished neighbor, convened Western and Arab Gulf nations in a lavish new hotel hung with crystal chandeliers and adorned with bronze equine statues on tall marble pedestals.

Another meeting, specifically on aid pledges, will be held in Riyadh in late June, with a ministerial meeting to follow on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in September.

"The future for Yemen is not about one-off donations. The future for Yemen is about the process that's already been set in train for the transition of that country," British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt said after the meeting.

Burt said Britain had pledged an additional $44 million on top of its existing aid to Yemen.

The meeting was aimed at strengthening the Yemeni state and returning a semblance of economic stability to a country where 40 percent of the population lives on less than $2 a day.

Yemen's modest oil exports were hit by repeated attacks on pipelines last year. The planning and international cooperation minister told the conference Yemen needed an initial $2.17 billion to help stabilize the country, fight militant attacks and ease a humanitarian crisis.

It required a further $5.8 billion in future to develop the economy and national infrastructure, with $3.7 billion needed by 2014, he added. Yemen is rapidly depleting its aquifers and the capital Sanaa may run out of water in the coming decade.

Countries from the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, attended the meeting, as did the United States, the European Union, France, Egypt and Russia, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

In April the IMF resumed lending to Yemen, approving the payment of a $93.7 million loan to help it address a balance of payments deficit that worsened during the political turmoil.
