The connection between Lynch syndrome and cancer

Yesterday on Evening Magazine (KING-TV Seattle) there was a segment about the host, Saint Bryan and our own William M. Grady, MD.?Saint saw a genetic counselor at SCCA, had a blood draw on TV, and had it analyzed for Lynch syndrome, an inherited condition that increases the chance of getting cancers of the digestive tract, most commonly in the colon and rectum. People with Lynch syndrome can be over 10 times more likely to get colorectal cancer than the average person in the U.S.

Also called hereditary nonpolyposis?colorectal cancer (HNPCC), Lynch syndrome also increases the risk for cancers of the stomach, small intestine, bile ducts, upper urinary tract, brain, skin, thyroid, and pancreas. Women with Lynch syndrome also have a high risk for endometrial and ovarian cancer.

About 160,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed each year in the U.S. and an estimated three out of every 100 cases of colon cancer are caused by Lynch syndrome.

People with Lynch syndrome may have colon polyps at an earlier age than the general population, and the polyps they do get are more likely to become cancerous than in the average risk population.

If?you have Lynch syndrome, how likely are you to get cancer? People with Lynch syndrome inherit an increased risk of getting cancer; there are many ways to decrease this risk. Families that have Lynch syndrome often, but not always, have many family members affected by cancer.?So if you have a family history of colon or endometrial cancer or have had more than one of these cancers yourself, you should discuss genetic counseling and testing with your doctor. Genetic testing looks for changes in the genes that indicate Lynch syndrome. Blood samples are required for genetic testing. Using special laboratory analysis, doctors look at the specific genes that can have mutations that cause Lynch syndrome.

People who have Lynch syndrome may experience colon cancer at a young age?before age 50. You?ll likely have a family history of early age colon cancer, endometrial cancer, and other cancers like ovarian, kidney, stomach, small intestine, and liver.

What were the results of Saint?s tests and experience with genetic counseling? You?ll have to watch it on? Evening Magazine (KING-TV Seattle)?to find out.

This human ancestor ate like a chimp

A video from Johns Hopkins University explains how teeth were analyzed to determine the diet of a 2 million-year-old human ancestor known as Australopithecus sediba.

By Alan Boyle

Researchers used a clever trio of tricks to figure out what 2 million-year-old human ancestors ate by analyzing the stuff on their teeth, and they found something unexpected: They ate more like chimpanzees than like humans. Their analysis could point to a reason why our species triumphed while some of our long-lost cousins failed.

"Our results suggest that there was more variation among hominins around 2 million years ago, in terms of what they ate and where they lived," Amanda Henry of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology explained in an email, using the technical term for humans and their close fossil relatives.

The various species spread out into different environments, ranging from forests to grasslands, but each species had a preferred environment, in part due to diet specialization. "Then, with the evolution of Homo erectus around 1.8 million years ago, we see a big shift," Henry said. "Homo erectus thrived in a whole variety of environments, and was even able to migrate out of Africa."

Homo erectus eventually gave rise to Homo sapiens ? that is, us. Meanwhile, the hominins that were tied down to Africa's forests?? perhaps including Australopithecus sediba, the South African species that Henry and her colleagues studied ? faded away in the competition with other apes. The latest research, published online today by the journal Nature, doesn't address that big evolutionary issue directly. But it does provide plenty of food for thought.

Decoding the diet
Australopithecus sediba was discovered in 2008, and has come to be seen as a transitional species between the relatively small, ape-like pre-humans known as australopiths and our closer ancient relatives in the genus Homo. Only a few specimens of the species have been recovered, but they appear to reflect chimp-like as well as human-like characteristics.

So which way did Au. sediba swing when it came to its diet? The researchers focused on the teeth of two specimens, a juvenile male and an adult female.

First, the researchers zapped the tooth enamel with a laser and analyzed the vapor that was given off. The composition of the enamel preserves a record of what the individual ate while it was growing up. In this case, Johns Hopkins University geochemist Benjamin Passey used a mass spectrometer to look at the balance of carbon-12 and carbon-13 isotopes in the vapor.

Lee Berger

The teeth of a juvenile male Australopithecus sediba had a dark layer of calculus, which is clearly visible in this close-up picture.

If the level of carbon-12 is relatively high, that suggests a diet heavy in forest products such as leaves, fruits and the critters that eat those things. Those are known as C3 foods. But if carbon-13 is high, that points to foods from the African savanna, such as seeds, roots and grasses. These are C4 foods.

"It seems like a hallmark of human evolution to be able to use savanna resources," Passey told me. "Today, most of our energy comes from grass in one way or another, either from grain or from animals that eat grain and grass."

Tests on sediments and various animal bones suggested that the area where the specimens were found was a savanna 2 million years ago. However, when Passey analyzed the samples from Au. sediba, he found that the carbon was almost pure C3, suggesting a diet heavy in forest products.

Two other lines of evidence confirmed that preference: Deposits of plaque on the teeth contained bits of silica, known as phytoliths, that were linked to forest vegetation. Also, the pits on the teeth were characteristic of creatures that favored a forest diet. All the evidence pointed to the conclusion that these particular pre-humans went to the forests for virtually all of their food, even though their remains were left behind in the savanna.

"This astonished us," Passey said.

The meaning of diet
Upon reflection, it shouldn't be that surprising that Australopithecus sediba passed up what the African savanna had to offer, said the University of Colorado's Matt Sponheimer, another co-author of the Nature paper. "We know living apes don't seem to like such foods much ??or at least they are never a large portion of their diets," he told me in an email. "It is likely that this is at least partly due to their masticatory (and probably digestive) anatomy being suboptimal for such diets."

Modern-day savanna chimpanzees engage in similar behavior, the researchers noted.

The findings are consistent with the view that "early hominins were quite flexible with respect to diet, with different populations preferring different parts of the available plant resource base, depending on when they lived, and where," said Bill Kimbel, who serves as director of Arizona State University's Institute of Human Origins but was not involved in the Nature study. "The plant phytoliths are a nice addition to the repertoire of perspectives on the issue."

In an email exchange, Kimbel cautioned against reading too much into Au. sediba's preference, as reflected by the results from two individuals. He took issue with my suggestion that the results put the species in the "chimp camp" rather than the "human camp," and noted that other hominin species had different preferences for C3 vs. C4 foods.

"I don't think sediba should be seen as 'remarkable' in this context," he told me. "And sediba no more belongs in the 'chimp camp' than it does in the 'giraffe camp' (with which it also shares dominant C3 values). This is not a useful analogy."

Sponheimer declined to say whether he thought Australopithecus sediba died out because it didn't shift its diet to the foods of the savanna, "but one could make such an argument if indeed this was an organism tied to very specific microhabitats by a limited dietary repertoire." A different argument could be made as well: Perhaps the descendants of Au. sediba eventually adapted to a diet that took in C4 as well as C3 foods, and thus contributed to the rise of early Homo.

Passey, for one, would love to study more specimens. "It would be nice to analyze those and see if all members of that species have that same forest behavior," he told me. However those future experiments turn out, the findings reported today show how novel techniques ? ranging from precision laser blasting to tooth-crud analysis ? can?shed light on the origin of our species. ??

More about human origins:

In addition to Henry, Sponheimer and Passey, the authors of "The Diet of Australopithecus Sediba" include Peter S. Ungar, Lloyd Rossouw, Marion Bamford, Paul Sandberg, Darryl J. de Ruiter and Lee Berger. The paper, published online today, will appear in a future print edition of Nature.

Vegan Junk Food ? Baking Bites

Vegan Junk FoodThere are many cookbooks out that feature vegan cookies, cakes and other treats, but many people still have the perception that eating a vegan diet means that you eat a whole lot of sprouts, nuts and berries while missing out on most good-tasting things. It?s not that sprouts, nuts and berries don?t taste good ? it?s just that they?re in a different category than waffles, brownies and creme brulee. Vegan Junk Food is a cookbook that aims to bridge this gap by providing more than two hundred recipes for ?junk foods? (most of which seem like ?normal? foods) that have been given a makeover to be completely vegan.

The cookbook features recipes in both sweet and savory categories. It starts with breakfast and offers recipes for everything from quiche to muffins to apple fritters. Other chapters include Deli Favorites, Meatless Entrees, Crusts and Carbs (pizza and breads), Party Favorites and Dips. For dessert, there are chapters that feature cakes, pies, cookies, candies, bars and brownies. And, yes, you?ll find totally vegan recipes for indulgences like creme brulee here, too. There is something for every meal, every occasion and every junk food craving! The recipes are easy to follow along with, with clear and well-written directions. Some of the recipes call for storebought vegan products, such as vegan sour cream, but recipes are provided for many of those same products, so that you can make them yourself at home as an alternative and use those in your recipes instead of running out to buy them. Not only do you get a lot of useful recipes, but you won?t need to rely on pricey storebought products to work with this book.

The only thing missing are more photos, but the sheer volume of recipes in the book makes up for the lack of photos because everything sounds tasty just from the descriptions. Vegans, without question, will have a lot of fun with this book. Non-vegans, whether you?re trying to cut back on meat/dairy or are simply looking for something new in the kitchen, will still have a good time with these recipes and enjoy the results ? which are very tasty in their own right, not just substitutions for the ?real? thing.

Despite its good ecologic status, there were no permanent settlements in the south Swedish inland 9,000 years ago. Yet the area was visited by people who wanted to express their individuality and creativity and thereby gain status. This is found in a new doctoral thesis from the University of Gothenburg.

Carl Persson's doctoral thesis in Archaeology is based on archaeological material discovered in connection with the construction of the E4 highway by Markaryd, Sweden. The finds consisted of a few very small pieces of flint that had been left behind in connection with visits to what used to be a small island in the outlet of a long-gone lake. The wear marks on the flint fragments reveal that they were used to carve meat, bone, wood and horn. The wear marks combined with computer-aided analyses of the phosphate levels in the ground and the distribution of the finds has yielded a detailed account of people's visits to the site some 9,000 years ago.

'It is generally believed that conclusions about Stone Age life require large amounts of archaeological finds, but the results in my thesis contradict that notion,' says Persson.

To put the site in a larger context, Persson reconstructed the Mesolithic landscape through computer-aided analyses. It turns out that the landscape has changed dramatically 9,000 years ago the now brown lakes were clear and full of nutrients and had a high pH level. The average temperature was much higher than today and the dense forests were full of lush broad-leaved trees.

'Yet despite the good ecologic conditions, the area didn't attract many people in the first millennia after the Ice Age. Analyses show that the inland probably wasn't permanently inhabited during the Mesolithic period (10,000-4,000 BC), but that people did come to visit,' says Persson.

Traces from the inland visits are almost always found near waterways and lakes, and analyses of the finds indicate that different groups have travelled to the inland with different ambitions. The visits are probably due to the fact that people moved across very large areas 9,000 years ago. The extensive travel had to do with the extremely low population density in order to meet other people you had to travel far and have broad social networks.

'In a society characterised by a quest for equality, knowledge about foreign locations and other people was a way for people to distinguish themselves and gain status. Against this background, the trips to the inland 9,000 years ago can be seen as a natural consequence of people's creativity and desire to express a sense of individuality,' says Persson.

Turkey seeks NATO action over Syria jet downing

Reports are surfacing that Syria may have shot down a Turkish fighter jet over Syrian waters in the Mediterranean Sea. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By msnbc.com news services

Turkey on Sunday called for an extraordinary meeting of NATO? after one of its planes was shot down by Syria in international airspace ? an incident condemned by Britain as ?outrageous.?

Turkey insisted the plane had mistakenly strayed into Syrian territory andwas not on a spying mission. It?filed an official protest note to Damascus.

State-run TRT television reported that Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had called the meeting for Tuesday over article 4 of the NATO charter concerning Friday's incident.

The article says member countries "will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened."

The wreckage of the plane was discovered in the Mediterranean on Sunday at a depth of 3,281 feet, TRT reported. The pilots still have not been accounted for.

NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said the North Atlantic Council, the principal political decision-making body within the military alliance, would meet in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the incident.

"Turkey has requested consultations under Article 4 of Nato?s founding Washington Treaty,? she told Reuters.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the jet downing as "brazen and unacceptable" and vowed close U.S. cooperation with Turkey to promote a political transition in Syria.

Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said Sunday that he was "gravely concerned by the Syrian regime's action in shooting down" the plane, and said Davutoglu had told him no warning was given.

Turkey: Syria's downing of military jet cannot be ignored

"This outrageous act underlines how far beyond accepted behavior the Syrian regime has put itself and I condemn it wholeheartedly," Hague said in a statement. "The Assad regime should not make the mistake of believing that it can act with impunity. It will be held to account for its behavior. The UK stands ready to pursue robust action at the United Nations Security Council."

Hague met last week with U.N and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan for talks on plans for an international summit, while British officials discussed the issue in Geneva on Saturday with members of Annan's team.

"This deplorable incident underlines the urgent need to find a solution to the current crisis in Syria in order to bring an end to the violence and to achieve a genuine political transition," Hague said.

Davutoglu said earlier Sunday that the jet was downed in "international airspace" after it mistakenly strayed into Syria, but the plane was not on a spying mission. He said the plane had entered Syria on Friday, but quickly left when warned by Turkey.

The plane had no "covert mission related to Syria," Davutoglu said, adding that it was purely on a training flight to test Turkey's radar capabilities.

Davutoglu said the plane was shot down one mile inside the airspace several minutes after it left Syria.

Syria on Saturday insisted the shooting was "not an attack," and that the plane had violated its airspace.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Ecuador?s president considers bizarre asylum bid by WikiLeaks? Julian Assange

David Stringer The Associated Press

LONDON?Ecuador?s embassy in London said Saturday that ambassador Anna Alban was travelling to her country?s capital to brief President Rafael Correa on the bizarre request for political asylum made by Wikileaks chief Julian Assange.

Assange took refuge inside the embassy on Tuesday and remains camped out in an office there after his legal options ran out for avoiding extradition from Britain to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning for alleged sex crimes.

Correa, Ecuador?s leftist president, has said his government is considering Assange?s request, but has not indicated when a decision will be made.

In a statement, the country?s embassy said Saturday that Alban had boarded a flight to Quito to personally brief Correa on the situation.

?While in Ecuador she will be holding a series of meetings with officials at the ministry of foreign affairs before meeting President Correa to personally brief him on Mr. Assange?s application for political asylum,? the statement said. ?She will also fully brief the president on her recent meeting with officials of the U.K. Government.?

Speaking Thursday from inside the embassy, Assange said he had made his bid for asylum because the ?Ecuadoreans were sympathetic in relation to my struggles.? He had previously interviewed Correa, with whom he shares skepticism toward the United States.

?Ecuador presently finds itself in a unique situation and it is important that those responsible making the final decision on Mr. Assange?s application are fully briefed on all aspects of the present,? the embassy said in its statement.

Assange has been fighting since 2010 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over alleged sexual assaults on two women. Assange denies the claims, and says the case against him is politically motivated.

Both he and supporters insist that if he was sent to Sweden he would then likely become the target of a U.S. request to extradite him there over allegations linked to his leaking of hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. documents via the secret-spilling WikiLeaks website.

U.S. soldier, Pfc. Bradley Manning, a 24-year-old from Crescent, Oklahoma, has been charged with aiding the enemy by passing the secret files to WikiLeaks and is awaiting trial.

A Virginia grand jury is studying evidence that might link Assange to Manning, but no action has yet been taken.

?We are hoping what I am doing now will draw attention to the underlying issues,? Assange told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio in an interview Thursday.

Correa said his country would discuss the case with Britain, Sweden and the United States before reaching a final decision.

While inside the embassy, Assange remains outside the reach of British authorities ? but police are poised to arrest him the moment he steps foot outside the building.

Police said Assange will be arrested for breaching the terms of his bail, which included an overnight curfew at a registered address.

Assange?s lawyer Jennifer Robinson said Saturday that filmmaker Michael Moore has sent Assange a message of support, urging him not to despair.

Robinson posted an email sent by Moore, among supporters who offered money to meet Assange?s 200,000 pounds ($316,000) bail, to her Twitter account.

In the message, sent Wednesday, Moore told the WikiLeaks founder it was a crime ?that you even have to seek asylum, and I stand with you through this. Do not despair.?

Importance Of Knowing The The Pros And Cons Of Debt Consolidation

Debt consolidation is a very important part of loans that should be understood by all who are associated with loans in some way or the other. In fact, when you take a low interest loan at a fixed rate, you are consolidated to debt. This implies that this is a way by means of which you can reduce the amount of money that you will have to pay every month. This also often involves rolling huge amounts of loans at the same time. In fact, if you have lots of debts, consolidating these debts through different means is one of the best things that you can do in this case. However, before you go for consolidation, one of the most important things that you should always keep in mind is that there are both pros and cons of it.

Take a look at the pros:

  • Reduce the payment: one of the most important benefit is that you will now be able to reduce large numbers of payments and make it into a single payment. This in turn, will definitely help in the reduction of the payment. Consequently, it will also be easy for you to stay organized.
  • Interest rate in low: the rates of interest that you will have to pay for consolidation of your debt will also be low. This is because now you will have to pay the interest only on the consolidated loan.
  • Enhanced deadline: the original terms of the loan are often enhanced, which means that if the balance is due for six months, it might often be extended to 12 or in some cases even 18 months. Moreover, in case of a home equity loan, the taxes might also be deductible.

Debt Consolidation

Know the cons:

  • Potential for more debt: if you are not careful, there is a potentiality for more debt. This is because the sense of getting rid of debts will make you spend more, and this in turn, might again make you more in debts.
  • Ruin the credit: in most cases, there are some debt consolidation companies might hold your debts, especially if you are paying them a lump sum amount and accordingly try to change the settlement. This in turn, might create a great impact on your entire credit history.
  • Not suitable for everyone: it is very essential to remember that debt consolidation is not meant for everyone, because consolidation does not teach any new good habits, but encourage further spending.

There was a time when people believed that it is quite easy to get the debt consolidation loans, but this is certainly not true in today?s date. Thus, if you think that your credit is in a good standing position, you can go for these loans, bit on the contrary, if you have poor credit records, it is better not to go for these loans, because this might do you more harm than good. Therefore, you must be very careful before going for these loans, and determine in advance whether this will be helpful at all for you.

With Windows Phone 8, Microsoft Just Osborned Itself

Two years after scrapping its old mobile OS, Microsoft is doing it a second time?and it may be the company's only remaining option.

On Wednesday, Microsoft officially unveiled Windows Phone 8, a major upgrade to its struggling mobile OS?and shot its entire existing user base to hell in the process.

I don't own a Windows Phone. But I review a lot of them, and praise Windows Phone OS pretty much every chance I get. It has its flaws, but it shows flashes of brilliance both in UI design and overall refinement. The thing is, it's not selling?and remember, it was supposed to save the company's prospects on phones, after years of neglect with the horribly designed and bloated Windows Mobile.

Enter Windows Phone 8, which is pretty interesting. It looks a lot like Windows Phone 7.5 on the surface, aside from a neatly redesigned home screen. But underneath lies a sea change, as Windows Phone 8 will share the same kernel as the desktop version of Windows 8?something that, amazingly, Microsoft has never tried before, in the roughly 15 years it has spent trying to crack the PDA and mobile market.

With Windows Phone 8, Microsoft is also adding support for everything the OS needed, including multi-core processors, multiple (read: higher) screen resolutions, swappable memory cards, IPv6, and NFC. Developers previously restricted to working in Microsoft Silverlight can now write native code, as well as code in HTML5, XNA, .NET, and C#. The new OS will even use the NTFS file system and support enterprise-level security hooks similar to those for desktop and laptop PCs.

This is all great stuff. But Microsoft said that no existing Windows Phone devices will be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8. To appease those users, it's offering up another version, referred to as 7.8, that will contain the home screen customizations and other superficial enhancements, but that's it.

The Osborne Effect
In doing this, Microsoft just eliminated any reason to buy a Windows Phone device today?echoing a distant-but-famous phenomenon known as the Osborne effect.

In the early 1980s, Osborne Computer Corporation was the first computer hardware company to go bankrupt essentially by unveiling a product it couldn't sell yet. The company announced the Osborne Executive, a new computer that wouldn't be available for several months. Meanwhile, the Osborne 1, which legendary computer engineer Lee Felsenstein designed, was still on sale. So what happened is that from the moment the company announced the Osborne Executive, sales of the Osborne 1 fell to approximately zero. Not only that, but various dealers all began canceling their Osborne 1 orders. Ultimately, this contributed to the destruction of the company.

I'm far from the first to bring up the Osborne effect. It's a useful parable in the tech industry to which you can refer back. Obviously Microsoft failing in mobile devices will not bring about its imminent collapse; it's much larger and stronger than that. But not only does Microsoft's decision torpedo the goodwill it had with existing Windows Phone partners?particularly Nokia?but it also affects every phone on sale right now. From now until the release of Windows Phone 8, every single Windows Phone buyer is someone who can never upgrade to Windows Phone 8.

Sean Carroll, our managing editor for software, Internet services, and networking, posed that as a result of all this, if all the various carriers sell 10,000 Windows Phone 8 users on day one, that OS will then have a user base of 10,000. In other words, Microsoft is basically wiping out every single existing user of Windows Phone and starting over.

What Purpose Could This Possibly Serve?
So with all this in mind, why would Microsoft even do this to begin with? Microsoft says that it couldn't get its new code base to work on existing single-core phones. That's sort of believable, but it doesn't do anything for Microsoft's long-standing reputation for bloated OS code.

More likely, it's a tacit acknowledgement that the company's current path on mobile isn't the right answer. To be sure, Windows Mobile needed to go, but Windows Phone isn't working, either. The thinking is that the existing user base, while important and unfortunate to screw over, is still really small. Better to do this now while Microsoft still can, in other words.

Existing Windows Phone 7.5 devices will continue to work with the 100,000 apps already available in Windows Marketplace. And developers writing new Silverlight apps will have Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8 customers, as the new version of the OS will continue to run Silverlight apps. But apps developed for Windows Phone 8 specifically won't work on existing phones, which means it won't be long before 7.5 users can no longer update their favorite apps.

A Twitter user who goes by the name of Natasha wrote that Windows Phone fans defending Microsoft's decision to orphan 7.5 reminded her of Stockholm Syndrome. I find that hilarious, and there's probably some truth to that statement. But whether you agree or not, it's clear Microsoft is at a perilous point, and needed to do something, fast.

But I can't help but think Microsoft could have found some compromise?at least to get it working on the absolute latest Windows Phone devices, such as the Nokia Lumia 900, the HTC Titan II, and the Samsung Focus 2. All of these phones now have an orphaned OS. Only the Lumia 900 is selling in appreciable quantities, but even so, Microsoft just basically eliminated any reason to buy one of these phones for the next several months.

Would you buy a Windows Phone today?any of them?knowing all this? And knowing you'd be stuck in a two-year contract with it? Let me know in the comments.

Bill O'Reilly Rips Melissa Harris-Perry's Comments On 9/11, Racial Profiling (VIDEO)

Bill O'Reilly was dismayed by Melissa Harris-Perry's recent comments about racial profiling after 9/11 on Monday.

His guest was Lanny Davis, a former Clinton strategist who is teaming up with Michael Steele for a new project to urge civility in their political parties. O'Reilly told Davis, "you gotta know you're fighting a losing battle."

The Fox News host pointed to MSNBC to make his argument. He first called the network out for its editing of Mitt Romney's remarks about East Coast chain WaWa. Then, he turned to a clip of Harris-Perry's speech at the Take Back the American Dream Conference in Washington, D.C.

In it, she said that terrorism has allowed Americans to "stomach a kind of horrific racial violence in the name of national security,? something that ?we have been willing to stomach as a people over and over again in our history."

On Monday night, O'Reilly called her comments "unbelievable." He said sarcastically, "So we in the United States are racists because we defended ourselves against radical Islam after 9/11 ? you can?t combat that."

"How do you combat that?" he asked guest Lanny Davis about Harris-Perry's remarks. Davis, who is said he also "strongly disagree[d] with what she did."

"But you can't stop her!" O'Reilly cried. When his guest suggested that critics need to speak up, he responded, "She doesn't care what you say!"

AT&T says Galaxy S III pre-orders won't land until June 25th, Samsung decides to celebrate anyways

AT&T says Galaxy S III preorders won't land until June 25th, Samsung decides to celebrate anyways

Samsung's US Galaxy S III launch is turning out to be quite the muted affair. Along with news of staggered Sprint and T-Mobile releases, AT&T is now adding that its Galaxy S III version likely won't make June 21st at all. Pre-order customers who were promised the phone this week are instead being told to wait until June 25th; they might get it early, should the smartphone stars align properly. If you're having pangs of regret for not pulling the trigger earlier, you'll have to wait up to 10 business days before before that Marble White or Pebble Blue beauty shows at your door. AT&T is pinning the delay on short supply, much like its fellow American launch carriers.

Not that the lack of handsets is stopping Samsung from kicking off an elaborate launch campaign of its own. Along with the usual celebrity and Times Square stunts, the Korean corporation is starting up a curated media hub, Beacon, and placing NFC-equipped Share-to-Go Stations: those in the happy position of carrying a Galaxy S III in their hands can download free content just through swinging by a kiosk. You can catch the full details of Samsung's escapades after the break.
