14 New Movies Every Geek Should See

Release Date: Aug. 3

Yes, the characters are the same as in the 1990 original, and the premise is too. But in Len Wiseman's version of Total Recall, the action moves from Mars to Earth?a high-tech, dystopian future of Earth. (Wiseman promises you'll still get your three-breasted woman and other nods to the original, though.)

"There's a huge canvas of extraordinary toys and effects and concepts," says Colin Farrell, who plays Douglas Quaid, a factory worker who, upon visiting Rekall, discovers that his memory has been erased and he's actually a secret agent. Many of the effects were created for real. "Len likes to do as much as he can practically," says Kate Beckinsale, who plays Lori, Quaid's wife, "whether it's building sets that are fully photorealized that we get to walk around and feel that they're real, or hovercars that really are hovering and feel dangerous and scary."

Wiseman thinks the general idea of Total Recall isn't necessarily that outrageous. "There's so much escapism right now," he says. "There are people who create their own avatars, and it's an exploded version of what dungeons and dragons used to be... I think that [Recall is] possibly ahead, whatever form it is."
