Top 5 Destinations to Scuba Dive | Resort ... - Travel & Leisure

Scuba diving is a great way to explore and appreciate underwater beauty. Getting close to the myriad colorful fishes and coral reefs definitely beats just seeing them in an aquarium. As a sport, scuba diving is a very challenging discipline but diving enthusiasts would be the first to agree that it is very much worth it.
Most avid scuba divers have their own bucket list of diving destinations that they would like to complete. If you are up for some new ideas, then read this post. This article gives a short roundown of the top 5 destinations for scuba diving.
1. Bonaire
This special municipality of the Netherlands is one of the most picturesque spots in the Caribbean. Bonaire is the ?B? in the ABC islands of the Leeward Antilles ( ?A? and ?C? being Aruba and Curacao). It has been a favorite diving destination for decades, because its coasts possesses an extraordinary calmness. And because Bonaire?s authorities pride themselves on strictly enforcing marine protection laws, the waters of this island abound with beautiful and exotic marine life. On a similar note, nearby Curacao is another scuba diving destinations that can be deemed truly worthy of the name.

2. The Philippine Islands
An archipelagic country composed of more than 7000 islands, the Philippines has a great number of shore diving sites. Each coastal region featured varying marine populations, so you are bound to find something different in each one. The southernmost coasts are home to young white tip sharks and moray eels, while the Visayan group of Islands is home to lionfish, anthias and clownfish.

3. Indonesia
Like the Philippines, Indonesia is also an Asian archipelago. This makes for almost endless possibilities for scuba diving. One of the most popular scuba diving destinations in Indonesia is the sunken WWII supply ship Liberty in the Tulamben region of East Bali. The ship is only a shirt swim from the shore and it has become one of the most stunning artificial reefs that you will ever see. Another great spot is the Secret Bay, which is just off western Bali and Gilimanuk. The Secret Bay is home to such amazing sea critters like mimic octopuses, frogfish, weedy scorpionfish, camouflaged pipefish, juvenile lionfish, and many others. The shallow waters of the bay allows adventuring divers to spend a lot of time at the bottom, just taking in the panoramic and ever-changing seascape.

4. Hawaii
Surfers have long recognized Hawaii as a must-see location, but its scenic coastline will have lots to offer any visiting scuba diver. Head on over to Oahu and explore Hanauma Bay, which features the Inside Reef. Natives say that the Inside Reef has a passage connecting to the Outside Reef, a spot which has an even better view. Advanced scuba divers could probably handle the challenging waves and currents of the Witch?s Brew, which has been named because the stronger water makes entry and exit to the coral garden a bit tricky. Just a reminder: Oahu?s north shore is pretty much off limits to divers in winter as the huge swells make it hazardous. Plan your trips for the summer months

5. Southern California
The US has its share of scuba enthusiasts too?and Southern California?s Orange County has quite an amazing underwater vista at Laguna Beach. Explore Diver?s Cove and Mermaid?s Grotto in just one tank, and see spiny lobsters and garibaldi. On another day, head on over to the Corona del Mar State marine reserve where a successfully restored kelp forest serves as home to critters such as opaleyes, senorita wrasse, and more garibaldi.
