Texas association responds to report questioning Medicare billings

Texas Association for Home Care & Hospice Executive Director Rachel Hammon responded to a recent report questioning home health care agencies? Medicare billings.

In response to a recent report questioning home health care agencies? Medicare billings, Texas Association for Home Care & Hospice Executive Director Rachel Hammon said any Medicare moratorium on new home health care agencies in Texas should be temporary.

The U.S. Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General last week issued the report, which said nearly 40 percent of all home health care agencies with suspicious billings are located in Texas, and called for the moratorium.

?Any potential moratorium should be temporary and last only until regulators fully implement the already available tools to combat fraud that do not disrupt patient service," Hammon said in an Aug. 2 statement.

Hammon said the association supports and encourages efforts to prevent Medicare and Medicaid fraud.

?It is important to note the OIG specifically noted in the report that their findings were based on claims data rather than medical documentation and do not determine whether the services billed were inappropriate or fraudulent rather than aberrant,? Hammon said in the statement.
