Using The Best Info Out There To Save On Auto Insurance | AMI ...

Finding the best insurance policy with the most coverage can be difficult, but when you factor in finding the lowest premiums, it can be a nightmare! This article contains a number of tips to help you combine the two issues, coverage and cost, without adding in a major headache to the process.
?
When considering insurance for a young driver, it is wise to not purchase an expensive car. Rates are high enough for teenagers, they will skyrocket depending on the type and worth of a car. In this situation, safety is one of the highest factors effecting insurance costs.
?
If you are just buying a car for jetting around town, see if your insurance company offers discounts for low mileage driving. The less you drive, the less likely you are to have an accident that your insurance will have to pay for. Most companies recognize this with discount offers.
?
Pay your auto insurance premiums in full. There are usually added fees tacked onto your rates if you decide to stretch your payments to monthly payments or even once-every- two-month payments. Also, rates are often cheaper when you have them set to auto-debit from your checking account instead of using a credit card to pay them.
?
If you plan on buying a new car but want to keep your insurance rates low, buy a cheaper car. The more expensive a car is to repair, the more money your insurer will require from you. You will save money both in buying a lower priced car and in insuring it, keeping it safely in your pocket.
?
J.D. Power ratings are a very handy guide for selecting an auto insurance company. They compare insurers on a number of criteria like cost, coverage options, claims handling, and customer satisfaction. They also take surveys with insurance customers to find which company has happy customers and which tend to cause problems for their customers.
?
Keep full coverage if you can not afford to replace your car on your own. Not being able to replace your car could occur when you have no money saved, your credit cards will not cover a new car purchase and you have bad credit scores that would impede you from getting a new car easily. Full coverage helps to protect you from a disastrous loss that you can?t pay for yourself.
?
Be sure to shop around and gather multiple insurance quotes. This way you can be sure that you are not getting ripped off and getting the best possible coverage for the price. Taking time to examine different companies? prices can save a whole lot of trouble.
?
Find out your state?s minimum liabilty insurance requirements before shopping for auto insurance. Also, find out how much an insurer will charge you for different car models if you are in the market for a new car. A sports coupe can cost hundreds or even thousands more than coverage for a safe family car with all of the latest safety features.
?
Even though auto insurance is something that?s required by law for you have, make sure that you sign with a company that?s right for you. You can choose who you sign with and what coverage you may need. Apply the tips above for a foolproof way to obtain the right auto insurance for

Can Romney Counter Obama?s ?Commander in Chief? Strategy?

In an election as close as this one, it is the little intangibles?that intuitive sense of confidence (or lack thereof) about a candidate that ambivalent voters carry with them into the booth?that can make all the difference. And although we?ve heard that this election will be almost entirely about the U.S. economy and not foreign policy, President Obama will make his national-security record a centerpiece of his closing night at the Democratic National Convention next week.

Why? Because arguably no Democrat since John F. Kennedy has run as tougher and more trustworthy than the Republicans on national security. Obama plans to do just that. He has chosen Sen. John Kerry?a war hero and candidate to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of State in a second term?to deliver a speech arguing that Obama ?has restored America?s leadership in the world? and ?has taken the fight to our enemies,? according to a campaign official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Obama campaign will contrast the president?s record with Romney?s hawkish but scattershot statements on the stump, characterizing the GOP?s usual we?re-tougher-on-defense tack as empty and dangerous rhetoric. Romney ?has embraced the go-it-alone, reckless policies of the past,? the official said, adding that Democrats will seek to identify Romney with the overextensions of the Bush administration.

The Democrats? eagerness to highlight national security is a dramatic contrast to the past four decades or so. Going back to 1968, when Vietnam dominated, Hubert Humphrey and then George McGovern ran against Richard Nixon as peace candidates. In 1976, Jimmy Carter campaigned in favor of d?tente and arms control with the Soviets. In 1980, Carter seemed weak after the Iran hostage crisis spurred the disastrous Desert One rescue mission. In 1992, Bill Clinton ran by touting soft power and globalization. And in 1996, Republicans called him meek for directing cruise-missile strikes and not harsher methods against Saddam Hussein, while dithering over Bosnia after the ?Black Hawk Down? disaster in Somalia.

As the White House sees it, Obama succeeded where Clinton and Carter failed, undertaking an enormously risky mission to hunt down Osama bin Laden. That was only part of a broader program that Obama secretly inaugurated upon taking office, tripling the number of Predator drone strikes. He has also withdrawn troops from Iraq and begun to do so in Afghanistan, without any stellar success but also without a notable catastrophe.

Republicans still insist that Obama is weak, that he ?led from behind? on Libya (giving NATO, Britain, and France the lead), and that he has hesitated in supporting democracy movements from Iran to Yemen. At the same time, however, Romney has not yet articulated a coherent vision of where he wants to take American leadership abroad, beyond advocating a stronger defense. And according to one Romney adviser who would discuss the campaign only on condition of anonymity, although the GOP candidate has a wide array of advisers, almost none of them consult directly with Romney.

Can a Democratic president really look more trustworthy on national security? With the election virtually deadlocked, Obama may not need to change many minds?only just enough.

Wall Decals Are A Beautiful And Inviting Addition To Any Residence Or

The power to place any amusing quote or beautiful inspiration is affordable and simple to display- vinyl wall decals can be applied to any wall within minutes, including wood, concrete, glass, metal, or any other smooth surface. Many companies will suggest horizontal or vertical lines on the intended wall in order to perfectly align every decal; walls should also be clean from dirt and dust and completely dried. When owners decide to change rooms, alter designs, or move, these vinyl signs are easy to remove but not intended for repositioning. Decals are a wonderful addition to any home or business for a more inviting d?cor and enhanced character.

Wall decals can be customized and placed in any room, such as offices, bathrooms, kitchens, or a child's bedroom- the edge of a credit card or similar object may be used to smooth wrinkles and eliminate air bubbles for the most professional look possible. Bathrooms are an excellent area for decals, as businesses may place a quote to instruct individuals to 'wash your hands', often seen with fancy lettering and swags or flowers although any picture can be utilized to match the interior; rub a dub, dub with a small duckling could encourage a small child to enjoy baths more often within a home. A catchy quote instructing clients to seize the day upon entering a corporate building can create a classy and friendly environment.

Pictures and memories are greatly enhanced when a heartwarming phrase has been placed around an arrangement of frames. Famous quotes, common quotes, or even customized phrases can be a wonderful addition to any living room, allowing owners and visitors to see why there truly is no place like home. Religious excerpts and passages are popular with many customers, along with love and friendship as well, definitely since home is where the heart is.

Restaurants and home owners alike will relish kitchen decals for humor and advertisement, as many in existence today comment on delicious coffee, how Mom's Kitchen is Open Twenty Four Hours a Day, or a catchy way for a new wife to let her husband know saying 'I do' did not include dishes. Holiday specific decals are well-liked as well, for the seasonal spirit they portray and the easy removal to prepare for the next celebration. Many walls possess the proud definition of a family name for honor, sports for a young boy, or a pledge to a young girl's favorite singer.

Wall decals are an excellent addition to any residence or commerce. A sundry of fonts, sizes, and designs are available for consumers to build their perfect phrase. Although a picture is worth a thousand words, these low-cost decals can be equally valued.

Sales Numbers Suffering? Tune Into These Email Marketing Tips

Email Marketing Tips

Email Marketing Tips

In the world of sales, sometimes you have to look at how you?re connecting to your target audience as much as who your audience is and, many times, these two quantifying factors will connect. Meaning, if you want to reach a certain age group demographic then it is a good idea to reach them through the medium that they use most. With digital communication being an ever-growing networking tool for all age groups, it is easy to see why marketing departments have added smtp (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) programs to their toolbox for sales.

You don?t have to put away your cold call list, shred your list of media advertisers or toss your postal mailing list. Setting up an email program is easy and can supplement your other ways to connect with prospective clients. If you?re having trouble understanding how you can integrate an email marketing plan into your marketing system, here are a few ideas that might help kick-start your sales.

The only way you can properly gauge what customers are interested in, on your mass email template, is if you are able to record the click-through rate that comes back after a mass mailing. You can also tell which links they were able to easily find on the email and which ones were not noticed at all. Use language that is easy to identify as a link, like ?click here,? and try to avoid images and buttons that are graphics that need to be displayed. Many email users will allow images to be displayed but some don?t. For those users, you might lose a sale.

It may seem antithetical to your goal, reaching out to more prospective clients and turning those into sales, but you want to be reaching out to a receptive audience, not one that is cursing you every time they delete your email from their inbox. If someone wants to opt out from your email subscription, let them! They might decide to come back if you make it easy for them to leave. If you hold a prospect hostage on your email list, it can cause bigger problems; when people are unhappy with a company?s customer service or outreach methods, they tend to talk to everyone about it online. You want to be the company that gets rave reviews from your clients, not scathing comments like ?I want to get off of their email list but it?s too complicated.? Be sure to have an obvious link at the bottom of every email message that says ?unsubscribe? and try to not make the link a graphic, so the reader doesn?t have to display the image to see the unsubscribe button.

Be Specific

If you want to target a specific audience, it is a good idea to sort through the demographics of your prospects. In your email marketing program, try to sort your list by categories like age, location, employment, interests and possibly marriage status, depending on which verticals would apply most in your line of business. Sending out a sweeping generic message to your prospects isn?t necessarily a bad idea, but sending out a mass email that is directed toward specifically seniors that has a special offer from a medical-alert system service would not make as much sense for a younger demographic. It might be something that the younger recipient could forward to an older recipient if they happen to know someone it may interest, but making that connection on your own increases your chances of getting the sale faster.

Plan Your Campaign

After you have sorted your email list into groups that represent their demographic and before you send out your first email blast, you will want to set up an email campaign schedule for the year. If you plan to send out a mass email to your list(s) monthly, think about topics you will address, copy, video and select images and advertisements you will feature each month. Your plan might change month-to-month, but having a rough outlined schedule for the year will help you make sure you don?t repeat concepts and will help you to have fresh topical information and fun seasonal offers that your clients and prospects can get excited about.

Using these suggestions to build a stronger connection with your customer base might not skyrocket your sales numbers right away, but you might find that email marketing is a great solution for continuous communication with your prospective, current and returning customers. The convenience and accessibility of email marketing can also make the referral process easier, help you track how your sales are made and give you more information so you can decide what needs to change and where you can improve your marketing strategy.

Arctic ice shrinks to record low (+video)

Arctic sea ice has shrunk to the lowest levels since record-keeping began in 1979. Scientists say the new measurements indicate a fundamental change in the Arctic's sea ice coverage. ?

Here at the top of the world, the news that?Arctic?sea ice has reached a new low ? the smallest footprint since satellites began measuring it three decades ago ? is not much of a surprise.

Al Jazeera's Nick Clark joined an expedition travelling deep into the Arctic Circle to Qaanaaq, in Greenland.

The?Arctic?seas off the Alaska coast have been increasingly ice-free in recent years. On Monday, the gray, wind-driven surf churned vigorously along the northern coast, with no sign of ice anywhere under the low, fog-shrouded skies.

But it has been a strange summer here. Until a few weeks ago, there was more ice spread across the near-shore waters of the Beaufort and Chukchi seas than anyone can remember for the last several years ? a curse for the engineers waiting to begin plumbing oil wells into the sea floor, but a blessing for Inupiat hunters, who have had an unusually easy time catching seals from ice floes close to home.

?It really seemed kind of like it was back in the days when the ice was like it used to be,? said Nayuk Leavitt, a Barrow resident who works on one of Shell Alaska?s oil spill response crews.

But the late-lingering near-shore ice in Alaska, now in full retreat, was not representative of what is going on most everywhere else in a gradually melting?Arctic, scientists say. The National Snow and Ice Data Center in Colorado announced that?Arctic?sea ice had shrunk to 1.58 million square miles, the lowest expanse recorded since satellites began taking measurements in 1979.

That breaks a record of 1.61 million square miles set in 2007, and the shrinkage appears to be continuing: Ice is expected to keep melting through September.

Scientists said previous warm years had started a pattern of a melting of the multiyear ice that historically has clung to the poles. The newly thinner ice that remained from last year melted even easier this year ? although temperatures weren?t necessarily warmer. The phenomenon is probably feeding on itself, scientists say.

?In the context of what?s happened in the last several years and throughout the satellite record, it?s an indication that the?Arctic?sea ice cover is fundamentally changing,? Walt Meier of the National Snow and Ice Data Center told reporters in a conference call.

Although the late-lingering ice was a factor in delaying the start of the first offshore drilling here in more than two decades, Shell officials say the ice now has retreated to more than 20 miles north of the company?s primary drilling target, on the Berger prospect in the Chukchi Sea ? which itself is about 70 miles offshore.

The first of Shell?s drilling rigs, the Discoverer, is scheduled to arrive in the Chukchi Sea later this week. The other, the Kulluk, is halfway on its journey to the Beaufort Sea.

Permanent anchors have already been installed at both drilling locations to allow for the reduced target of drilling two complete wells this season, Shell spokesman Curtis Smith said in an interview here.

Shell has asked the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to consider extending by 18 days the Sept. 24 deadline under which the company was supposed to have completed drilling in the Chukchi Sea, where the relatively remote location requires an early wind-up to ensure there is time to address any problems that occur before the onset of winter ice.

But Shell?s own ocean ice experts say their latest modeling makes them fairly confident that ice is not likely to close in around the Chukchi drilling site until mid-November.

The company has been spending $4.5 million a year on ice studies, assembling a team of scientists whose expertise rivals or exceeds that of the National Weather Service.

They have documented a pattern of ice movements over the last 10 years that show predictable open ocean conditions in the Chukchi Sea until November every year, Shell?s chief scientist, Michael Macrander, told the Los Angeles Times.

He said 2006 is the year that most resembles the patterns seen this year: a winter of cold temperatures and heavy ice, in which the sea ice extended far south into the Bering Strait, followed by a very late melt-off in the summer. That year, like this one, saw factors such as warm surface temperatures and favorable winds that drove the ice, once it was beginning to clear, relatively far out to sea, he said.

?Once it cleared, it cleared significantly, and stayed clear until early November,? he said. ?And the pattern we?re seeing now is very, very similar.?

Kenya: Protests continue over death Muslim cleric

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Police and protesters fought running battles as a violent backlash to the killing of a radical Islamic preacher continued Tuesday in Kenya's second-largest city of Mombasa, which left several people hospitalized, police and human rights officials said.

The killing Monday of Aboud Rogo Mohammed, who was shot to death as he drove in his car with his family, falls into a pattern of extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances of suspected terrorists, allegedly being orchestrated by Kenyan police, human rights groups say. The attack has brought to the surface tensions in a city established centuries ago by Muslim traders from the Arabian peninsula and the Indian subcontinent, now home to hundreds of thousands of people of Arab descent and a large Somali population.

Police officers teargased youths on their second day of protests. Hussein Khalid of the Muslim for Human Rights group said police were using teargas against stone-throwing protesters. Khalid said one person was stabbed and hospitalized Tuesday.

Regional Police boss Aggrey Adoli said officers were forced to keep violent protests from spreading after protests they led to the death of one person and the vandalism of two churches and businesses on Monday.

"We are trying to contain them so that we don't create more deaths. Deaths and destruction of property will not help with anything," Adoli said.

Mohammed was recently sanctioned by the U.S. government and the U.N. for his alleged connection to an al-Qaida-linked Somali militant group, al-Shabab. He is the fifth alleged Muslim extremist who has been killed or who disappeared in the last four months, according to human rights campaigners. One corpse was found mutilated and the other four men vanished

Mohammed was shot dead as he drove with his family in Mombasa. His wife was wounded in the leg, said Mohammed's father who was also in the car along with Mohammed's 5-year-old daughter. He said he and the girl weren't injured.

Adoli said police have asked Muslim elders and religious leaders to urge the young protesters to stop the violence. A team of investigators from police headquarters in Nairobi arrived in Mombasa to start investigating Mohammed's killing, he said.

Police believe that Mohammed had ties to al-Qaida and was part of terror cell with links to al-Shabab militants that was planning to carry out bomb attacks in Kenya during Christmas. Other members of cell include Briton Samantha Lewthwaite, who police say is on the run. She is the widow of Jermaine Lindsay, one of the suicide bombers who killed 52 commuters in multiple bombings of London's transport system on July 7, 2005.

The other is Briton Jermaine Grant, sentenced to three years in prison for immigration offenses and lying to a government official about his identity. Grant is also charged with conspiring to commit a felony and possessing explosive materials

In January, Mohammed was charged with possession of a cache of guns, ammunition and detonators. He also faced charges of membership in al-Shabab

Al-Shabab has vowed to carry out a large-scale attack in Nairobi in retaliation for Kenya sending troops into neighboring Somalia to fight al-Shabab. The Kenyan government blames al-Shabab for several kidnappings on Kenyan soil, including those of four Europeans. The kidnappings greatly harmed the Kenya's coastal tourism industry.

Mohammed was acquitted in 2005 of murder charges for the 2002 bombing of an Israeli-owned tourist hotel near Mombasa which killed more than 12 people. In conjunction with that attack, two surface-to-air missiles were fired at an Israeli-owned airliner packed with Israeli tourists as it took off from Mombasa. The missiles narrowly missed.

Prosecutors at the trial said Mohammed had been in contact with Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, al-Qaida's East Africa head, who the U.S. said masterminded the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania which killed 231 people, including 12 Americans. A Somali soldier shot the al-Qaida leader dead at a checkpoint in Mogadishu, Somalia, last year.

Dispatches From the Republican National Convention

I'm actually sitting across from Dave as I type this, so my first visit to a Slate Breakfast Table is actually taking the form of lunch at a downtown Tampa sandwich-and-salad shop run by a social-service ministry.?

I can boast, in the type of construction used by the likes of Bob Schieffer, that I've covered every major-party national nominating convention since 1997?plus the 2000 "shadow convention" in which Arianna Huffington laid hands upon John McCain. (We were all so young then.)

That summer Republicans accused Al Gore of running a "reinvention convention." We remember the nominee's adoption of the Shrummian people-vs.-the-powerful shtick, but the more interesting reinvention may have been the one that Gore didn't have the confidence to stick with. If you recall, Gore asked Spike Jonze to do his version of a Man From Hope film; we were informed at the time that Being John Malkovich was Gore's favorite new movie. The movie Jonze made depicted the nerdy deadpan Gore many of us never met until David Remnick's 2004 profile.

That's because, after commissioning the film, convention planners basically buried it, running it at something like 7 p.m. on Tuesday night, so far ahead of the usual stage festivities that no one but C-SPAN viewers and Staples Center ushers saw it live. (I remember catching a bit of it in my Beverly Hills hotel room very late that night as C-SPAN reran the whole night's coverage.)

I don't know if the full story of the Gore-Jonze interaction was ever told, but it always seemed to offer the decoder ring for those who wondered why Gore's campaign was unable to take this smart, well-humored, and interesting guy and introduce him on those terms to the American people. After all, Gore was the guy who decided that?instead of a Harry Thomason or Mark McKinnon?he wanted Spike Jonze to tell his story. In my imagined version of that campaign, I can see Gore's advisers watching the Jonze film and quashing it because its subject just came off as so dorky.

We'll see what the Romney reinvention looks like, but I suspect I may come away from this week with the same feeling I had as I left Los Angeles 12 years ago. Do Romney's advisers truly know or like their candidate enough as a person to let him be himself in front of the whole country?

Neil Armstrong, first man on moon, dies at 82

Apollo 11 commander held true to his engineering roots

Web edition : 2:49 pm

Neil Armstrong landed and walked on the moon, the first of just a dozen men to do so. He died in Ohio on August 25, at age 82.

?Houston, Tranquility Base here,? he told NASA?s mission control after piloting the Apollo 11 lunar module to the surface on July 20, 1969. ?The Eagle has landed.?

Six and a half hours later, Armstrong climbed down the spacecraft?s ladder and stood for a moment on one of its saucer-shaped footpads. Then he stepped lightly to the left and into the lunar dust. ?That?s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind,? he said to hundreds of millions of people watching the live television broadcast. (The ?a? in his comment was not audible to those on Earth, but Armstrong later insisted he said it, and a 2006 audio analysis supported him.)

Armstrong?s life was forever defined by that day, but he defined himself foremost as an engineer. He once called himself ?a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer ? born under the second law of thermodynamics, steeped in the steam tables, in love with free-body diagrams, transformed by Laplace and propelled by compressible flow.?

Armstrong was born and grew up in Wapakoneta, Ohio, where he worked odd jobs to pay for flying lessons and earned his student pilot?s license on his sixteenth birthday. With a U.S. Navy scholarship he went on to study aeronautical engineering at Purdue University and then earn a master?s in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. Armstrong flew 78 combat missions for the Navy during the Korean War.

In 1955 he joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the predecessor to NASA, as a test pilot. Seven years later he joined NASA?s second astronaut class and got the job of piloting the 1966 Gemini 8 mission, the first rendezvous between two spacecraft. In orbit a thruster malfunctioned, sending the docked spacecraft into a nauseating spin. Armstrong disengaged from the second craft and got Gemini under control for a safe return to Earth.

Those nerves of steel ? and experience flying more than 200 kinds of aircraft ? came in handy many times during Armstrong?s career.

NASA assigned him to be commander of Apollo 11, the first attempted moon landing. While Michael Collins orbited overhead, Armstrong and Edwin ?Buzz? Aldrin descended to the surface in the lunar module. Armstrong, though, saw that the computer was taking them towards a boulder-strewn landing site; he overrode the computer?s instructions and piloted the module down with just seconds of propellant left to spare.

?You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue,? mission control told him. ?We are breathing again. Thanks a lot.?

Armstrong and Aldrin roamed the lunar surface for more than two hours, picking up 46 pounds of rocks and soil and leaving behind a seismometer, an American flag and other mementos. On returning to earth, they and Collins spent three weeks in quarantine in case they had brought back any extraterrestrial microbes.

After Apollo, Armstrong worked at a NASA desk job, then retired from the agency in 1971. He returned to Ohio and taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati for eight years, then worked in the aerospace business. Armstrong continued to serve on various policy committees, including NASA?s panel investigating the 1986 explosion of the space shuttle Challenger and a National Academy of Engineering group on the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century.

After 1972?s Apollo 17 became the last NASA mission to carry moonwalkers, Armstrong wanted the agency to return astronauts to the moon. In 2008, for NASA?s 50th anniversary, he told an audience that ?the goal is far more than just going faster and higher and further. Our goal ? indeed our responsibility ? is to develop new options for future generations: options in expanding human knowledge, exploration, human settlements and resource development, outside in the universe around us.?

NASA currently has no way to get astronauts to the moon even if it wanted to. The agency is developing a heavy-lift rocket with an eye to sending astronauts to Mars someday.

Armstrong died ?following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures,? according to a statement from his family. He had undergone quadruple bypass heart surgery in the weeks before his death.

Armstrong?s family asked the public to ?honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty.? As well as one more thing: ?The next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.?

How To Make More Money For Each Album Sold - Music Marketing ...

A stack of CD'sJust a little catch up first for anyone who is new here and still unclear about what makes the marketing strategy we focus on at MMM a bit different from what musicians typically do?

Music Marketing Manifesto is based on a strategy that is known in marketing circles as ?direct response marketing?. Instead of simply setting up a Reverb Nation page and an itunes account and waiting for hordes of fans to start magically pouring in and buying our albums (which doesn?t happen by the way), we go out and use proven selling strategies to drive traffic, capture leads, build an authentic relationship with our subscribers and then occasionally use ?sales triggers? to motivate our subscribers to get off the fence and become BUYERS. Once they have bought our music it becomes our goal (at least from a marketing perspective) to increase our customer value by selling additional items to our fans.

This is commonly referred to as an ?upsell? and it can take place in the form of..

1. An ?order option? that a customer sees before checking out.
2. An after purchase ?one time offer?.
3. An offer that a customer would be exposed to a little down the line in the form of a real time promotion or a ?limited time offer?.

Now just to address what is sure to be a common question? This is easy to set up if you are taking orders on your own site. You simply redirect customers to an offer page after they complete their purchase. You can do this with Paypal or just about any other shopping cart solution.

It?s trickier to do with sites like CD Baby and BandCamp but not at all impossible. To do this with third party sites like those, you simply need to remind people to pass on their email address during the order (the process is a tad different with each platform) and then you can manually import that person into your customer list where you could then send them the upsell offer, whenever appropriate.

For sites like Amazon and itunes you would need to offer a free bonus incentive to anyone who emails in their receipt or order ID.

Typically (but not necessarily), the idea behind the upsell is to offer your paying customers a deal that is better than what the general public can get and to do so while their wallets are out and they are in a ?buying mood?.

There is a psychological process at play here?

A person goes through a natural process of resistance before making a purchase. The sheer fact that they have ordered says that they have had had the internal debate as to whether or not your product was worth the money, and they have decided that it was.
So for example, lets say that you have just convinced a customer that your 10-song album was worth $10. Then, just after completing the process you offer them a box set of 50 songs for a mere $20 more. In order for that customer to reject the offer (assuming they can physically afford it), they need to make an internal argument that works against the logic that they just applied to the initial purchase.

Saying no to the upsell is like admitting to one?s self that the initial purchase was a bad idea to begin with. It?s hard for a person to come to such a conclusion. For good reason. The reality is that a properly structured upsell usually IS a great value for the consumer.

And that?s the idea. It?s a win for your fans, and a win for you. They get a bargain that is not available to the general public and you increase your bottom line by making a sale that you would have not likely made otherwise.

Now? Why is this so important?

Incorporating an upsell into your sales funnel is important simply because you can increase your customer value dramatically. In other words, you get more money for the same amount of work. Maximizing customer value is a major focus in most industries and it needs to be for independent musicians as well.

money graphWhy? Because music has a notoriously LOW price point. With only $10 or less in profit on each album sold it becomes very difficult to see a positive ROI from advertising. Just about every successful business in the world is based on advertising. Without it, we do not have the ability to expand.

Without advertising an independent artist is forced to either tour for the rest of their lives or to work each and every day at driving traffic manually (which gets old fast).

Because whether you want to realize it or not, the name of the game is TRAFFIC. Simply setting up an itunes account and spamming everyone on Twitter who has mentioned a band you sound like in one of their tweets, is not going to get you where you want to be.

And while paid advertising is not the first place I?d start (manually driving traffic online is), it is absolutely part of the end game for any independent artist who is hoping they can avoid touring for the next 30 years in order to make even a so-so living.

Here Are A Few Numbers To Consider?

Typically a subscriber can cost anywhere from .50 cents ? $2 to acquire. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

If you have a well-oiled autoresponder series in place (pre-written email campaign), you should be able to convert subscribers into customers between 1 ? 10% of the time. 4 ? 5% being around average.

If you spend $1 to acquire a subscriber, and you convert subscribers into customers at 5%? That means that you will spend $200 to generate 200 subscribers which will convert into $100 in revenue (assuming you profit $10 on each album).

Here?s a breakdown of that math:

$1 X 200 = 200 subscribers.
200 subs / 5% = 10 sales
10 sales X $10 = $100

Money spent: $200
Revenue: $100

Income: Negative $100.

Yikes! That?s not gonna work.

HOWEVER, if you offer a $40 upsell and 30% of your customers take you up on that (30% is often sited as an industry average), you will then see $220 for your $200

Here?s the new math:

$1 X 200 = 200 subscribers.
200 subs / 5% = 10 sales
10 sales X $10 = $100
30% Upsell rate = 3 sales for $120
Money spent: $200
Revenue: $220

Income: $20

Now we?re getting somewhere.

And the profit potential doesn?t stop there. When your focus is on generating, communicating with, and selling to, your list, then you have the ability to profit over and over again. You will be consistently upping your customer value and increasing your ability to afford new advertising channels.

Add live shows, or better yet, house concerts to the mix and you?ll see a serious spike in customer value as you bring in those big ticket conversions.

This is when the infamous ?1000 true fans? model actually works.

Just to address the inevitable?

At Music Marketing Manifesto we discuss music marketing strategy. And we make no apologies for doing it, nor do we couch it with a bunch of feel good crap that doesn?t serve anyone.

But in doing so it sometimes depersonalizes a process that is ultimately about passion, heart, and soul. We did not learn to play our instruments and spend years dedicated to the craft of music so that we could one day have a strong ?conversion rate?. We play music to touch the hearts and minds of our fans and even grow and heal as individuals.

We are NOT trying to manipulate people against their will. Rather, our goal is to understand how consumers think and present ourselves in a way that is conducive to getting the response we want.

I hope it goes without saying that if you are benefiting more than your fans are from the transaction, then something is off and you need to make a few changes to your business model.

And now with the touchy feely stuff out of the way?

So what if I don?t have anything else to sell?

One of the most common reactions I get to the ?upsell? concept is that often musicians feel that they don?t have anything more to offer their fans, aside from some way-to-expensive t-shirt that, let?s face it, no one really wants anyway unless they are a die-hard fan. And most customers, especially the new ones, are not die-hards.

Not to fear, there are a ton of ways you can monetize your list that take very little effort and/or money to create.

In a few days, I will follow up with part two in this series and offer a number of different ways that you can make infinitely MORE MONEY for each album sold.

Stay tuned for part two?

And while you guys wait, I?d love to hear your experience. I know many of you at least offer product options and upgrades. What percentages of your customers order more than just the album?

Have any creative upsell ideas that you guys would like to share?

Leave a comment below and let me know. I?d love to hear your thoughts on this.

Japan finds 'banned N. Korea items' on ship: report

Japanese customs officials have found goods believed to be from North Korea and whose export is banned aboard a cargo ship in Tokyo, a report said Saturday.

The ship entered a container terminal on Wednesday after officials obtained information North Korea might have loaded internationally-banned items onto the vessel, Kyodo news agency reported citing unidentified sources.

The customs officials found several containers believed to have been exported from North Korea. They contained items including aluminum rods which could be converted for military use and steel products, the report said.

The products in the containers had markings which showed that they were manufactured in the reclusive communist state, Kyodo quoted the sources as saying.

It is the first probe carried out under a cargo inspection law, which came into force in 2010 following a United Nations Security Council resolution adopted in 2009 to punish North Korea for its second nuclear test.

The law allows Japanese authorities to inspect foreign-flagged vessels suspected of carrying banned materials from or to North Korea.

The cargo ship was believed to have set sail from the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian, heading to Southeast Asian countries via Tokyo, Kyodo said.

Under China's watch, Macau won't return to "Gangster's Paradise"

MACAU (Reuters) - Three murders, hammer-wielding heavies, and a high-profile police swoop have raised concerns that Macau, the world's casino capital, may be backsliding to the bad old days of the late-1990s. And that's even before ex-triad boss "Broken Tooth" ends a 15-year jail sentence in December.

All this at a time when China's economy, the world's second-biggest, is growing more slowly - hitting gambling revenue and possibly making junket operators, who collect gambling debts in exchange for commission from casinos, more aggressive.

But on the former Portuguese colony's narrow, bustling streets and inside the glitzy, fortress-size casinos, there's little indication the violence is spiraling out of control in the only place where Chinese nationals can legally casino gamble.

Much has changed in the past 15 years in Macau, a special administrative region on China's southern coast. Then, the seedy gambling enclave was plagued by open gang warfare. Bombs went off in the streets and shoot-outs broke out in broad daylight.

In 1999, Macau seceded from Portugal to China and, now, Las Vegas tycoons including Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn have helped transform the territory into a multi-billion dollar goldmine, a magnet for high-rollers and global investors. Gaming revenue last year was $33.5 billion, more than five times that of Las Vegas.

The key, say security forces, political analysts, lawyers and academics, is that China is in control.

"Number one: the Chinese government will not tolerate it (rising violence). Number two: if you look at the structure of the VIP room operation in Macau, it's a completely different story from 1998," said Davis Fong, a director of the Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming at the University of Macau.

The murder and mayhem in the late-1990s was sparked by the triads' aggressive maneuvering to capture more of the lucrative VIP gambling market, which accounts for over 70 percent of total revenues.

Today, most of those operating Macau's VIP rooms - select areas in casinos that target the big spenders who drop more than 1 million yuan ($156,900) at a time - are companies, rather than individuals, investing in a lucrative market where total monthly revenues are still rising. Analysts expect August gambling revenue to show a pick-up after a quarter of subdued growth.

Security officials, though, say the industry junkets which operate these rooms often have links to triads or gangs.

Police raids this month and last, codenamed "Thunderbolt" and held in conjunction with Hong Kong and Chinese authorities, detained more than 300 people and resulted in 3 jail sentences, 22 suspended prison terms and 15 people still in custody. The main crimes were drug use, illegal immigration and fake documents.

Local residents say the Macau police undertake "clean-up raids" every month or so, and they didn't see the recent swoop, which had wide media play, as anything special. "There are frequent checks on all the casinos, karaoke and nightclubs and sauna parlors," said one local man, who didn't want to be named.

Despite slowing growth - gambling accounted for more than 40 percent of Macau's total GDP in 2010 - the government is developing large-scale infrastructure, and new properties are going up alongside the glass towers and casinos that make up the Cotai Strip. Beijing has incorporated Macau into China's Five Year Plan and wants to position it as an international leisure destination, reducing its reliance on casinos.

WARNING TO OTHERS

Hoffman Ma, deputy chairman of Success Universe Group, which has a joint venture with casino king Stanley Ho's SJM Holdings to operate Macau casino Ponte 16, said the local government opted for a high-profile police raid as a warning to others.

"The major junkets don't want this (more violence). Many of them are involved in other industries and have been using their connections to get into other businesses like bullion and forex in Hong Kong. They're diversifying," he said.

Given Macau's small size - about a third as big as Manhattan - word gets around quickly and China would have little problem quashing any potential escalation in violence, said David Zweig, Chinese politics expert at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

"They would probably just put pressure on the Macau government to really crack down. They might send in an adviser or two, but you wouldn't see an influx of mainland police ... that would scare people," he said.

Visitors to Macau - and there were 28 million last year - don't seem scared.

At the palm-fringed Grand Lapa luxury resort, where two people were murdered recently inside the hotel, guests milled around the busy lobby on a weekday afternoon, queuing to check in. Staff at a nearby Chinese medicine store said there had been no impact on local residents.

"The hotel murders are related to the gambling industry. Macau is safe, everyday people don't have to worry," said a doctor working at the store.

Diagnostic test shows potential to noninvasively identify significant coronary artery disease

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Among patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease, use of a method that applies computational fluid dynamics to derive certain data from computed tomographic (CT) angiography demonstrated improved diagnostic accuracy vs. CT angiography alone for the diagnosis of ischemia, according to a study being published online by JAMA. The study is being released early to coincide with its presentation at the European Society of Cardiology Congress.

"Coronary computed tomographic angiography is a noninvasive anatomic test for diagnosis of coronary stenosis [narrowing of a blood vessel] that does not determine whether a stenosis causes ischemia [inadequate blood supply]. In contrast, fractional flow reserve (FFR) is a physiologic measure of coronary stenosis expressing the amount of coronary flow still attainable despite the presence of a stenosis, but it requires an invasive procedure. Noninvasive FFR computed from CT (FFRCT) is a novel method for determining the physiologic significance of coronary artery disease (CAD), but its ability to identify ischemia has not been adequately examined to date," according to background information in the article.

James K. Min, M.D., of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, Los Angeles, and colleagues conducted a study to evaluate the performance of noninvasive FFRCT compared with an invasive FFR reference standard for diagnosis of ischemia. The study included 252 patients with suspected or known CAD from 17 centers in 5 countries who underwent CT, invasive coronary angiography (ICA), FFR, and FFRCT between October 2010 and October 2011. About 77 percent of patients had experienced angina within the last month. Ischemia was defined by certain criteria. Anatomically obstructive CAD was defined by a stenosis of 50 percent or larger on CT and ICA. Among 615 study vessels, 271 had less than 30 percent stenosis and 101 had at least 90 percent stenosis.

Among study participants, 137 (54.4 percent) had an abnormal FFR as determined by ICA. The researchers found that the diagnostic accuracy for FFRCT plus CT was 73 percent, which did not meet a prespecified primary end point for accuracy (as pre-specified based on the lower limit of a calculated 95 percent confidence interval). By comparison, diagnostic accuracy of CT alone for detecting coronary lesions with stenosis of 50 percent or greater, was 64 percent. When comparing FFRCT alone with CT alone for detecting these lesions, FFRCT demonstrated superior discrimination.

"On a per-patient basis, diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of FFRCT plus CT were 73 percent, 90 percent, 54 percent, 67 percent, and 84 percent, respectively," the authors write. They note that the sensitivity and negative predictive value of FFRCT were high, indicating a low rate of false-negative studies. "These diagnostic features of FFRCT may encourage a greater sense of diagnostic certainty that patients who undergo CT who have ischemia are not overlooked, such that clinicians may be confident in not proceeding to invasive angiography in patients with stenoses on CT when FFRCT results are normal."

Online Business Booming | Professional Article Marketing

?

One of the recent booming online businesses are anything affiliated with generating leads for payday loan applications. The mystery to outsiders of this business of gathering information and selling to payday loan companies on an online auction is bringing big money in to a somewhat quiet industry. As with any other business, as the demand increases, there tends to be those with fraudulent practices who work their way into the system. There have been some red flags to the back end of the online payday loan industry and genuine companies are doing their best to protect it.

There have been a few leaks as to how the behind the scenes systems work, and it will give you an idea as to why scammers are trying to get into the system.

When a person applies for a loan to a non-lending company, the information submitted in the application gets tested for duplicate applications in a database. Once the information is proved to be authentic, it is sold in an online auction. Lending companies will bid to have a look at this person?s information and will have just seconds to decide whether or not to purchase it. Once a purchase has been made, the company will send an email to the potential customer in response to their initial loan request. If the first company passes on the customer, the value drops and a second company may choose to look. This continues until the information is sold or the applicant is rejected for a loan. There have been huge steps in this process to protect addresses and emails from leaking out.

Lenders and sellers are screened to get into the system, but there have been some fraudulent companies who have slipped by and have taken advantage of a customer?s personal information. Some lending companies who refuse to approve a loan are also set up to sell of the applicant?s information to a company who will process the loan. The lenders are looking for good clients to lend to and the expense to buy the access to this information is bringing in big revenue to lead generators.

The online payday loan lead generator business is definitely making a name for itself in the online business world. Their efforts to continue to keep fraudulent activity out and maintain a profitable business of auction type sales safe and secure is ongoing. Any person who feels like their information was retrieved by a person or company for fraudulent practices should file a report right away.

DIY Friday ? Okasaneko Chronicles

This post has been hanging around for a while now, waiting. I?ve been meaning to take better pictures of the whole process but since I?m never going to find time for that our hectic home schedule in the foreseaable future, I decided to share them today, my DIY Friday.

This is an easy, no frills way to make miniature trees, shrubs and foliage. There are other ways to make these for your Sylvanian diorama. If you?re still looking for inspiration on how to make your own displays more lifelike and exquisitely detailed, head on over to Carrot Creek Sylvanian Village, where Beverly makes the most beautiful, most elaborate displays all Sylvanian lovers drool over. Just to give you an example, here is a picture from her site, with credit to the original site it appears in:

I?ve also since learned another way to create trees and foliage for my displays, this time, courtesy of the artistic talents of my forum friend Eric of A Calico Town. I love the way he created his own tree using the cardboard from a roll of toilet paper. Not only is it ingenious, it?s earth-friendly! How can you beat eco-friendly beauty? Here is a picture I borrowed from Eric, again with credit for the owner/creator of this lovely photo:

I am thinking of following Eric?s instructions for this tree (you can find more detailed pictures and some intructions here, in case anyone is interested), which would mean possible trips to craft stores and home depots to pick up different sized leaves and flowers. If you?re not too keen on making your own trees and would like, instead, to simply ?plant? ready-made miniature tree, this is the DIY trick I learned from another Sylvanian collector, Joanna of My Sylvanian Collections. (We miss you, Joanna!)

Here are the materials you will need:

  • cutter
  • scissors
  • glue gun
  • glue
  • any round bottle or canister (different sized)
  • styrofoam board
  • cardboard (you can use leftover boards from old shirts and underwear)
  • hedges and trees
  • green flocking (spread it on a paper plate to make application easier; when you?re all done, make a cone of the paper plate and pour the flocking back into a bag or a jar for future use)

You can purchase trees, shrubs, and hedges?at Deovir, a local arts supplies store, as also the green flocking that you will use as grass.? These are trees used by architectural firms when they make scale models of their projects so you can find lots of different varieties in-store. They?re also relatively inexpensive so you can make lots of them at one time.

When you?ve prepared all your materials, begin by using one of your round canisters to trace a round shape on your styrofoam board. Cut it using a craft cutter. (For kids, ask an adult to help you with this.)

Stick your cut styrofoam circle into a larger circle made of cut-out cardboard (here is where you will need different sizes of canisters and bottles). Spread some glue over the styrofoam circle and gently press it on the green flocking. When you turn it over, you will have covered it completely. Poke your pencil through the center of the circle to make room for your tree.

Using hot glue gun, stick your grass around the sides of the green circle. Do the same for your tree by ?planting? it in the center of the styrofoam circle.

This is how your finished tree (or shrubs) will look like!

Easy peasy! Have a lovely weekend, folks!

P.S. Don?t forget to drop by the Toy Kingdom Toy Expo at the Mall of Asia SMX from today till Sunday! :-)
