PFT: AP comes up short, but Vikes reach playoffs

Dallas Cowboys v Washington RedskinsGetty Images

For most of the year, Redskins running back Alfred Morris was the other rookie, if that.

Sunday night, he put his name up with John Riggins, or at least Timmy Smith.

Morris ran 33 times for 200 yards and three touchdowns, in the Redskins 28-18 win over the Cowboys. With their seventh straight win, the Redskins advance to the playoffs as the NFC East champion, and will host the Seahawks next Sunday.

The Cowboys? season ends with an 8-8 record.

And it ended thanks in large part to the sixth-rounder from Florida Atlantic.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was obviously ailing (and threw for only 100 yards), so it was on Morris to carry the load offensively.

He did that, and then some, controlling the game from the inside out, even though the Cowboys knew what was coming. It?s the kind of performance that sets up an old school duel with Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch next week.

But even before the playoffs start, it was the kind of game that made Morris part of a rich history of runners.

Here are five more things we learned during Sunday Night Football:

1. Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had thrown three interceptions in his previous eight games.

His three picks Sunday night will continue to define him, such that the definition changed.

It?s a shame, because he had played so well the last month, and been so good in fourth quarters.

But he may never be able to escape the fact that when it?s time for a play to be made, he ends up making it for the other team. Defensive end Jason Hatcher tried to take him off the hook with a ridiculous penalty at a ridiculous time (the first of the night for the Cowboys), but Romo will remain the focus, as he should.

2. Between the evaluation of Mike Shanahan or the budding genius of his son Kyle drawing up plays for the offense, it?s been easy to miss to work done by Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett.

Keep in mind, this is a coach that lost his best pass-rusher in Brian Orakpo along with defensive end Adam Carriker two games into the season.

He?s built the thing around London Fletcher, who has battled injuries all year and wasn?t the fastest to begin with. But Haslett dialed up pressure, and it got home enough to keep the Cowboys off-balance.

It?s not an easy thing he?s done, but the Redskins have responded on that side of the ball. They?re not great, but they?ve been good enough, long enough.

3. That said, the Cowboys were running out of numbers and nametags on defense.

They entered the night with a one-armed DeMarcus Ware, then outside linebacker Anthony Spencer went down with an injury in the third quarter, though he?d come back.

They had put inside linebackers Sean Lee and Bruce Carter on injured reserve previously, and lost nose tackle Jay Ratliff to a groin injury.

That many losses to the front seven finally became more than they could bear.

4. The converse of the Cowboys injury plagued defense is the Redskins offensive line, which has been greater than the sum of its parts all year.

Left tackle Trent Williams has first-round pedigree. But left guard Kory Lichtensteiger, center Will Montgomery, right guard Chris Chester and right tackle Tyler Polumbus are the kind of guys you fill in the blanks with.

For the Redskins, they?re a foundation.

Polumbus missed one game with a concussion, otherwise the group has been intact all season. Rookie Josh LeRibeus replaced Lichtensteiger briefly in the third quarter, but they finished the game the way they?ve played the second half of the season.

Together.

5. DeAngelo Hall gave Dez Bryant the ?Back up off me bro? treatment for most of the night.

The Redskins cornerback, who has traditionally been more talk than walk in his career, kept the clamps on the Cowboys star wideout most of the evening.

Bryant finished with four catches for 71 yards?before leaving with an injury, but wasn?t a factor, which your best player needs to be in this type of game.

New Year's Eve 2012: Healthy Ways To Celebrate

New Year's Eve: Endless waterfalls of crisp champagne, party-pumping pop music and the perfect, sequined outfit. Yea, right. In reality, it's usually more like an "open" bar with hour-long waits and watered-down drinks, a stranger spilling a mystery substance down the front of your over-priced outfit -- and, ah yes, January 1's infamous hangover.

This year, why not do things a little differently? Below are eight healthy ways to ring in the New Year. We'll be making our toast to stressing less about this ordinarily high-pressure evening, and celebrating by doing the things that make us feel good, plain and simple. Let us know how you'll be ringing in the new year in the comments below!

  • Dance The Night Away

Three reasons to shake your groove thing this New Year?s Eve: 1.Dancing can burn upwards of <a href="http://www.healthstatus.com/cgi-bin/calc/calculator.cgi">350 calories per hour.</a> 2. Dancing can improve <a href="http://www.healthguidance.org/entry/10409/1/Health-Benefits-of-Dance.html">your sense of self</a> -- and make you feel super confident. 3. Dancing <a href="http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa022252">may boost your memory</a> and lower your risk for dementia. And a fourth? It's just so fun.

  • Drink ... Responsibly

Many of us toast to the new year and new beginnings. But here at Healthy Living, we're giving you a nudge to keep moderation in mind. <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/30/drinking-benefits_n_1233544.html">You'll reap</a> the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jay-williams-phd/post_977_b_746290.html">health benefits</a> that are tied to alcohol <em>and</em> be able to enjoy the first day of the year without the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/28/alcohol-effects-body-infographic_n_2333328.html">scary effects</a> that come with overdoing it.

  • Take A Midnight Yoga Class

Downward dog as the clock strikes 12? Why not? <a href="http://stralayoga.com/news/new-years-eve-yoga/">Lots</a> of <a href="http://www.gaiaflowyoga.com/media/new-years-eve-celebration/">studios</a> offer New Year's Eve yoga classes, so you can bend your way into 2013. You?ll reap the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/25/yoga-stress-inflammation_n_1702316.html">many</a> <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kripalu/yoga-benefits_b_1975025.html">benefits</a> that <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-michael-j-breus/yoga-insomnia_b_1939696.html">yoga</a> has to offer, clear your head and, who knows, maybe even secure that recommitment to yoga you've resolved to for the coming year.

  • Enjoy A Celebratory Smooch

Chances are, you were planning to plant a peck on someone special at midnight. Smooch on! Kissing can increase oxytocin levels, which helps to reduce stress, anxiety and even your blood pressure, <a href="http://www.shape.com/lifestyle/sex-and-love/5-health-reasons-make-time-cuddling">Shape reports</a>. You can sneak in a little calorie burning while you're at it: Kissing can burn anywhere from <a href="http://www.self.com/health/2010/08/five-benefits-of-kissing-slideshow#slide=5">two to six calories per minute</a>. That may seem insignificant, but hey, we'll take it.

  • Run A Race

Maybe 2012 wasn?t your year. While we never recommend running from your problems, running toward a solution -- in this case, a clean slate -- might be your best bet. Whatever your reason (and we?re in full support of running strictly for <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/11/28/running-effects_n_2206584.html">endorphins' sake</a>) signing up for a <a href="http://www.race360.com/newyears/">midnight run</a> is a great, healthy way to ring in the new year. Many races end with a celebratory glass of bubbly -- so you can still hang on to old traditions while making new ones.

  • Volunteer

While we tend to think about giving back more on Thanksgiving and Christmas, New Year's Eve should be no different. Do some research on local shelters or hospitals that are in need of some extra hands. Besides making the New Year better for others, you'll be happy to know that giving back can help release those feel-good hormones like <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/terri-cole/volunteering-health_b_2189477.html">serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine</a>. You'll remember 2012 as the year you gave back and enter 2013 with some good karma to your name.

  • Host A Potluck

With paper plates. And plastic cups. Take the pressure off serving a perfect, gourmet meal and have all your friends pitch in this year. And since everyone is contributing, you won?t have to worry about <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/20/healthy-christmas-cookies_n_2340766.html">specific dietary needs</a>. Plus, you?ll stress less without the thought of dirty dishes looming over your head <em>and</em> you?ll have more time to enjoy quality time with your friends.

  • Have A Healthy Mentality About The Night

Whatever your plans, the most important thing may be to lay off on the pressure. We often hype up New Year?s Eve as the night of all nights, and end up disappointed. This year, why not make an early resolution to be present at your celebration, enjoy the company you keep and see the opportunity that tomorrow brings.

New Dealership Brings Dozens of Jobs to LC

The South Carolina unemployment rate fell to its lowest level of the year in November -- 8.3% and the good news keeps coming for those looking for work in the lowcountry.

There's a new kid on the block in the New River Auto Mall -- the brand new Lexus of Hilton Head, which plans to open its doors in a matter of days.

"Days away, maybe hours away, we have cleaning crews working tonight and have furniture being delivered Monday morning and we're excited to get open and service our customers," said owner, Jim Mollica.

But with this new six-million dollar building also comes dozens of local jobs to the lowcountry.

"We're going to create somewhere between 40 and 50 jobs here in the local area. And when we built this building about 90% of the contractors were from this area."

And it was important for owners to help strengthen other local business as well in order to grow the whole economy.

"We make a living, our employees obviously make a living by the economy here, and so we're giving it back to other companies so they can support their families."

But why here and why now? Mollica says about 20% of his business in Savannah is done by folks from the lowcountry, and he says this is the right location and the right time to open this store.

"We have a big customer base up here, we have opportunity up here, and its Lexus, there's no Lexus dealer up here, and its time for one."

Report: Hazing rules ignored before death at FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? A blistering state report released Friday contends that Florida A&M University officials failed to follow state laws and regulations on hazing in the years leading up to the death of a FAMU drum major.

A 32-page report from the Florida Board of Governors inspector general's office concludes that the school lacked internal controls to prevent or detect hazing, citing a lack of communication among top university officials, the police department and the office responsible for disciplining students.

But investigators said there was insufficient evidence to conclude whether university officials ignored allegations of hazing given to them by the former director of The Marching 100 band shortly before the November 2011 death of Robert Champion.

Larry Robinson, FAMU's interim president, said the university would officially review the report for any inaccuracies, but noted there were no new incidents detailed in the report. Still, he said the university would use the report to make sure that it had taken appropriate steps to prevent future hazing incidents.

"What I want to focus on is what we are doing at the university to minimize the chances of things happening again," Robinson said.

The report comes at a critical time for FAMU. Earlier this month a regional accrediting organization placed the school on probation for 12 months. The university has one year to prove it is turning itself around or its accreditation could be revoked.

FAMU officials say they have already made sweeping changes in the aftermath of Champion's death, which also resulted in the retirement of the band director and the resignation of the university president. The Marching 100 band remains suspended, but when it is reinstated band members will have to meet strict new eligibility requirements, including a minimum grade point average.

Robinson said that he still does not know when the Marching 100 will return. FAMU still has not picked a new band director, or hired someone for two other positions intended to help the university clamp down on hazing at the school.

The report caps a tumultuous year for the university, which has also endured a criminal investigation into the finances of the Marching 100 as well as the revelation that the university trustees were given false audit summaries by university auditors.

State University System Chancellor Frank Brogan stated in a memo sent out Friday that the problems detailed in recent months at the university "did not happen simply by accident, nor did they result from benign neglect."

"The problems that have permeated FAMU for more than a year were a direct result of action or inaction by FAMU personnel, who either had not developed adequate policies or simply did not enforce policies that were in place," Brogan wrote.

Brogan recommended that the Florida Board of Governors ? which oversees the state university system ? work closely with FAMU officials in the months to come and report regularly on the actions being taken.

It was the board's own inspector general who issued Friday's report, which was ordered shortly after Champion was beaten by fellow members of FAMU's famed band during a hazing ritual aboard a charter bus. More than a dozen students were charged for their role in Champion's death.

But the inspector general looked at how FAMU officials handled hazing complaints during the tenure of former FAMU President James Ammons. The report echoes an Associated Press story from March detailing how hundreds of pages of public records showed that repeated warnings about brutal hazing passed without any serious response from the school's leadership until Champion's death.

The Board of Governors' inspector general conducted more than 35 interviews and reviewed more than 7,000 pages of documents covering 2007 through 2011.

The final report found that hazing complaints were not routinely forwarded to the school's judicial affairs office for review or disciplinary action, band member eligibility was seldom verified, there was no central database to track hazing complaints, and there was no communication between police and the school's judicial affairs office. For example, nine hazing cases investigated by FAMU police were never referred back to the judicial affairs office to see whether student conduct rules were violated.

The report points out that rules adopted back in 1998 intended to prevent hazing in the band were ignored.

Investigators also tried to figure out what happened at a Nov. 16, 2011 meeting that was held just days before Champion's death.

Top FAMU officials at the meeting discussed hazing in the band and the possibility of hazing at the upcoming Florida Classic game being held in Orlando. The meeting was being held shortly after band director Julian White suspended nearly 30 students for the game due to hazing allegations.

Some of those at the meeting - including former FAMU Police Chief Calvin Ross - told investigators they had recommended suspending the entire band and keeping them from performing. But then-FAMU Provost Cynthia Hughes-Harris disputed that account and said that option was not discussed.

Champion's family has filed a lawsuit contending that the school failed to take action to stop hazing. That lawsuit cites the Nov. 2011 meeting as an example of inaction by top FAMU officials.

In September FAMU asked a judge to throw out the Champion family lawsuit, saying it should be dismissed on several grounds, including that Champion should have refused to participate in hazing events. The university then offered $300,000 to settle the lawsuit but the offer was rejected by the family.

Robinson said that he could not speculate on whether the new report would be used by the Champion family to press on with its lawsuit.

Desert Storm commander Norman Schwarzkopf dies

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Truth is, retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf didn't care much for his popular "Stormin' Norman" nickname.

The seemingly no-nonsense Desert Storm commander's reputed temper with aides and subordinates supposedly earned him that rough-and-ready moniker. But others around the general, who died Thursday in Tampa, Fla., at age 78 of complications from pneumonia, knew him as a friendly, talkative and even jovial figure who preferred the somewhat milder sobriquet given by his troops: "The Bear."

That one perhaps suited him better later in his life, when he supported various national causes and children's charities while eschewing the spotlight and resisting efforts to draft him to run for political office.

He lived out a quiet retirement in Tampa, where he'd served his last military assignment and where an elementary school bearing his name is testament to his standing in the community.

Schwarzkopf capped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991 ? but he'd managed to keep a low profile in the public debate over the second Gulf War against Iraq, saying at one point that he doubted victory would be as easy as the White House and the Pentagon predicted.

Schwarzkopf was named commander in chief of U.S. Central Command at Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base in 1988, overseeing the headquarters for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly two dozen countries stretching across the Middle East to Afghanistan and the rest of central Asia, plus Pakistan.

When Saddam invaded Kuwait two years later to punish it for allegedly stealing Iraqi oil reserves, Schwarzkopf commanded Operation Desert Storm, the coalition of some 30 countries organized by President George H.W. Bush that succeeded in driving the Iraqis out.

At the peak of his postwar national celebrity, Schwarzkopf ? a self-proclaimed political independent ? rejected suggestions that he run for office, and remained far more private than other generals, although he did serve briefly as a military commentator for NBC.

While focused primarily on charitable enterprises in his later years, he campaigned for President George W. Bush in 2000, but was ambivalent about the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In early 2003 he told The Washington Post that the outcome was an unknown: "What is postwar Iraq going to look like, with the Kurds and the Sunnis and the Shiites? That's a huge question, to my mind. It really should be part of the overall campaign plan."

Initially Schwarzkopf had endorsed the invasion, saying he was convinced that Secretary of State Colin Powell had given the United Nations powerful evidence of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. After that proved false, he said decisions to go to war should depend on what U.N. weapons inspectors found.

He seldom spoke up during the conflict, but in late 2004 he sharply criticized Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and the Pentagon for mistakes that included erroneous judgments about Iraq and inadequate training for Army reservists sent there.

"In the final analysis I think we are behind schedule. ... I don't think we counted on it turning into jihad (holy war)," he said in an NBC interview.

Schwarzkopf was born Aug. 24, 1934, in Trenton, N.J., where his father, Col. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, founder and commander of the New Jersey State Police, was then leading the investigation of the Lindbergh kidnap case. That investigation ended with the arrest and 1936 execution of German-born carpenter Richard Hauptmann for murdering famed aviator Charles Lindbergh's infant son.

The elder Schwarzkopf was named Herbert, but when the son was asked what his "H'' stood for, he would reply, "H."

As a teenager Norman accompanied his father to Iran, where the elder Schwarzkopf trained the Iran's national police force and was an adviser to Reza Pahlavi, the young Shah of Iran.

Young Norman studied there and in Switzerland, Germany and Italy, then followed in his father's footsteps to West Point, graduating in 1956 with an engineering degree. After stints in the U.S. and abroad, he earned a master's degree in engineering at the University of Southern California and later taught missile engineering at West Point.

In 1966 he volunteered for Vietnam and served two tours, first as a U.S. adviser to South Vietnamese paratroops and later as a battalion commander in the U.S. Army's Americal Division. He earned three Silver Stars for valor ? including one for saving troops from a minefield ? plus a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and three Distinguished Service Medals.

While many career officers left military service embittered by Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was among those who opted to stay and help rebuild the tattered Army into a potent, modernized all-volunteer force.

After Saddam invaded Kuwait in August 1990, Schwarzkopf played a key diplomatic role by helping persuade Saudi Arabia's King Fahd to allow U.S. and other foreign troops to deploy on Saudi territory as a staging area for the war to come.

On Jan. 17, 1991, a five-month buildup called Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm as allied aircraft attacked Iraqi bases and Baghdad government facilities. The six-week aerial campaign climaxed with a massive ground offensive on Feb. 24-28, routing the Iraqis from Kuwait in 100 hours before U.S. officials called a halt.

Schwarzkopf said afterward he agreed with Bush's decision to stop the war rather than drive to Baghdad to capture Saddam, as his mission had been only to oust the Iraqis from Kuwait.

But in a desert tent meeting with vanquished Iraqi generals, he allowed a key concession on Iraq's use of helicopters, which later backfired by enabling Saddam to crack down more easily on rebellious Shiites and Kurds.

While he later avoided the public second-guessing by academics and think tank experts over the ambiguous outcome of the first Gulf War and its impact on the second Gulf War, he told The Washington Post in 2003, "You can't help but ... with 20/20 hindsight, go back and say, 'Look, had we done something different, we probably wouldn't be facing what we are facing today.'"

After retiring from the Army in 1992, Schwarzkopf wrote a best-selling autobiography, "It Doesn't Take A Hero." Of his Gulf War role, he said: "I like to say I'm not a hero. I was lucky enough to lead a very successful war." He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and honored with decorations from France, Britain, Belgium, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain.

Schwarzkopf was a national spokesman for prostate cancer awareness and for Recovery of the Grizzly Bear, served on the Nature Conservancy board of governors and was active in various charities for chronically ill children.

"I may have made my reputation as a general in the Army and I'm very proud of that," he once told The Associated Press. "But I've always felt that I was more than one-dimensional. I'd like to think I'm a caring human being. ... It's nice to feel that you have a purpose."

Schwarzkopf and his wife, Brenda, had three children: Cynthia, Jessica and Christian.

(AP) ? Egypt's chief prosecutor ordered Thursday an investigation into the leaders of the country's opposition after a lawyer accused them of incitement to overthrow the regime of newly elected Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, a prosecution official said.

The order, issued by an appointee of Morsi, is likely to aggravate political tensions that have erupted into street violence, most recently surrounding the newly passed but divisive constitution.

The accusation, filed last month, alleged that Mohammed ElBaradei, a Nobel Prize laureate and former head of the U.N. nuclear agency, along with Amr Moussa, a former foreign minister, and Hamdeen Sabahi, a former presidential candidate, campaigned to seek Morsi's overthrow.

The probe does not necessarily mean charges will be leveled but it is unusual for state prosecutors to investigate such broad charges against high profile figures. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government policies.

Yara Khallaf, a spokeswoman for Moussa, said there were no official charges or summoning for investigation, declining to comment on the accusation.

Emad Abu Ghazi, the secretary general of the opposition party ElBaradei heads, said he had no details about the investigation but that the accusations and probe were "an indication of a tendency toward a police state and the attempt to eliminate political opponents."

Abu Ghazi said the former regime of Mubarak dealt in the same way with the opposition. There was no immediate comment from ElBaradei or Sabahi.

The accusation came during a political crisis over a series of presidential decrees that granted Morsi, Egypt's first elected president, and the committee drafting the disputed constitution immunity from judicial oversight.

The opposition called on Morsi to rescind his decrees and accused him of amassing too much power in his hands. It also asked for the draft constitution to be withdrawn.

The opposition organized a number of massive rallies in protest, including one outside Morsi's palace in which protesters chanted "Leave." It was a common refrain during the protests against former President Hosni Mubarak, who was ousted in a popular uprising last year.

The rally turned violent when supporters of Morsi, who perceived the protest as a threat to his legitimacy, attacked their opponents.

Clashes erupted that turned deadly and were followed by attacks on offices of the Muslim Brotherhood, the main backers of the constitution and from which Morsi hails, and the office of a liberal opposition party, al-Wafd. At least 10 people died in the violence, and the Brotherhood claimed they were mostly its supporters.

Morsi and Brotherhood officials accused the opposition of working to undermine the president's legitimacy, and accused former regime officials of working to topple him.

Genetic sequencing breakthrough to aid treatment for congenital hyperinsulinism

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Congenital hyperinsulinism is a genetic condition where a baby's pancreas secretes too much insulin. It affects approximately one in 50,000 live births and in severe cases requires the surgical removal of all or part of the pancreas.

Researchers at the University of Exeter Medical School are the first in the world to utilise new genetic sequencing technology to sequence the entirety of a gene in order to identify mutations that cause hyperinsulinism. Previously, existing technology limited such sequencing to only part of the coding regions of the gene which meant that some mutations were missed.

Using new Illumina genetic sequencing technology, the research team led by Professor Sian Ellard has discovered novel mutations that cause hyperinsulinism. Their findings are published December 27 2012, on-line by The American Journal of Human Genetics.

The outcome will be that some infants born with hyperinsulinism will require fewer investigations, because the new technology means that for many only one genetic test will be required to determine the extent of the condition in each child. It also means that clinicians will have more information at their fingertips to inform them about how much of the pancreas needs to be removed.

Approximately 50 per cent of patients with congenital hyperinsulinism require surgery, and of those half require the entire pancreas to be removed. Removal of the entire pancreas increases the risk of diabetes later in life, but if left undiagnosed and untreated hyperinsulinism can result in irreparable brain damage. Symptoms range from shakiness and tiredness to seizure and coma.

Dr. Sarah Flanagan, Research Fellow in Molecular Genetics at the University of Exeter Medical School said: "The potential provided by this new technology is important and exciting, because it allows us to investigate genetic coding in its entirety. This means that investigators can identify mutations that sit at the heart of any number of conditions where before they might have been missed. This in turn results in better information for clinicians upon which they can base effective treatments and interventions for their patients."

Time runs short to avert longshoremen's strike

(AP) ? In just a few days, a walkout by thousands of dock workers could bring commerce to a near standstill at every major port from Boston to Houston, potentially delivering a big blow to retailers and manufacturers still struggling to find their footing in a weak economy.

More than 14,000 longshoremen are threating to go on strike Sunday ? a wide-ranging work stoppage that would immediately close cargo ports on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico to container ships.

The 15 ports involved in the labor dispute move more than 100 million tons of goods each year, or about 40 percent of the nation's containerized cargo traffic. Losing them to a shutdown, even for a few days, could cost the economy billions of dollars.

"If the port shuts down, nothing moves in or out," said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation. And when the workers do return, "it's going to take time to clear out that backlog, and we don't know how long that it's going to take."

Shipments of such varied products as flat-screen TVs, sneakers and snow shovels would either sit idle at sea or get rerouted, at great time and expense. U.S. factories also rely on container ships for parts and raw materials, meaning supply lines for all sorts of products could be squeezed.

Joseph Ahlstrom, a professor at the State University of New York's Maritime College and a former cargo ship captain, called container ships the "lifeblood of the country."

"We don't fly in a lot of products. It's just too expensive," Ahlstrom said. "The bulk of the products we import come in inside containers."

The master contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, a group representing shipping lines, terminal operators and port associations, expired in September. The two sides agreed to extend it once already, for 90 days, but they have so far balked at extending it again when it expires at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

The union said its members would agree to an extension only if the Maritime Alliance dropped a proposal to freeze the royalties workers get for every container they unload. The Alliance has argued that the longshoremen, who it said earn an average $124,138 per year in wages and benefits, are compensated well enough already.

Federal mediators have been trying to push negotiations along, but there has been no word from either side on the progress of the talks since Dec. 24. As recently as Dec. 19, the president of the longshoremen, Harold Daggett, said the talks weren't going well and that a strike was expected.

The work stoppage would not be absolute. Longshoremen would continue to handle military cargo, mail, passenger ships, non-containerized items like automobiles, and perishable commodities, like fresh food.

Yet the economic damage could still be severe.

"The global economy moves by water, and shutting down container ports along the East and Gulf coasts while the national economy remains fragile benefits no one," Deborah Hadden, acting port director at Massport, the public agency that oversees shipping terminals in Boston. It is not a part of the contract dispute.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said "the livelihood of thousands of Florida families lies in the balance."

The White House weighed in, too, urging dockworkers and shipping companies Thursday to reach agreement "as quickly as possible" on a contract extension. Obama spokesman Matt Lehrich said the administration is monitoring the situation closely.

If it happens, the walkout could be the biggest national port disruption since 2002, when unionized dockworkers were locked out of 29 West Coast ports for 10 days because of a contract dispute.

The ports only reopened after President George W. Bush, invoking powers given to him by the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, ordered an 80-day cooling-off period. Some economists estimated that each day of that lockout cost the U.S. economy $1 billion. It took months for the retail supply chain to fully recover.

An East Coast port freeze would have its biggest impact at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where 3,250 longshoremen handled 32.3 million tons of cargo in 2010. The authority is not a party to the contract dispute.

Other major ports affected would include Savannah, Ga., which handled 18 million tons, and Houston and Hampton Roads, Va., which each handled more than 12.5 million tons.

Thousands of other jobs would be directly affected by the shutdown. Truck drivers might not have any cargo to transport, tug boat captains no ships to guide and freight train operators nothing to haul.

Simultaneously, another labor dispute involving dock workers was playing out on the West Coast.

Longshoremen at several Pacific Northwest grain terminals worked Thursday under contract terms they soundly rejected last weekend. The owners implemented the terms after declaring talks at an impasse. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has yet to announce its next move.

Workplace rules, not salary and benefits, have been the obstacle to a new deal.

The dispute involves terminals in Portland, Ore., Vancouver, Wash., and Seattle, where longshoremen have been working without an agreement since the last contract expired Sept. 30.

The Music Club, 2012

Katy Perry performs in Dubai on Dec. 8, 2012

I can?t wait to hear more from Kacey Musgraves. It looks like 2013 is shaping up as an excellent year for country, and from young bloods no less. I?m also looking at Ashley Monroe (one-third of Pistol Annies), a seasoned vet at 26 after a false-start debut when she was just 20. What I?ve heard of her forthcoming solo Like a Rose is exciting: handsome hard-luck tales for days of diminished expectations, with a definite outlaw streak; one track is titled ?Weed Instead of Roses.? When mainstream country acts are cutting songs with pro-chronic hooks, you know we?re in a new era.

OK, we?ve talked sex and drugs, so I figured I?d complete the trifecta and talk about ? jazz. Because the Music Club?s poptimism contains multitudes.

So did jazz in 2012. I reconnected with the music in a big way while writing Love Goes to Buildings on Fire (now out in paperback, pardon the shill), and the anything-goes spirit of the ?70s loft and fusion scenes is clearly alive and well. A number of loft-scene vets released important records: Henry Threadgill, Wadada Leo Smith, and the late Sam Rivers. Robert Glasper?s Black Radio?a rangy soul jazz/hip-hop session with Erykah Badu and Lupe Fiasco, among others?was the most (justifiably) celebrated of a clutch of records that engaged with pop vocal music in fascinating ways. Another was The Cherry Thing, which marked the return of comet-flash pop-rap hitmaker Neneh Cherry to the post-punk free-jazz groove music she explored in the early ?80s with Rip Rig and Panic. Collaborating with a Swedish group formed, in part, to play the groundbreaking music of her jazz-legend pops Don Cherry, she reanimated music by him and his colleague Ornette Coleman, along with tracks by Suicide, the Stooges, and MF Doom.???

Two of this year?s great vocal fusions came from tireless multitaskers. Dave Douglas released an expansive, beautiful set of folk hymns with bluegrass singer-songwriter Aoife O?Donovan. And Theo Bleckmann, a jazz and new music singer mentored by some visionary, fusion-minded women (Meredith Monk, Sheila Jordan) made a remarkable album consisting entirely of Kate Bush covers. What might have been camp?that aesthetic evergreen we?ve been discussing?aimed for something purer and no less splendorous (like another great gender-flipping, if not-so-jazzy cover, Antony?s take on Fleetwood Mac?s ?Landslide?).

There was plenty of stylistic fluidity in instrumental jazz, too. Mary Halvorson and her Quintet made my favorite jazz record this year, Bending Bridges, full of surprising melodies, discursive horn swaggers, and her wildly inventive electric guitar work, which wasn?t afraid to skronk and roar. I also love the metaphor of the title, which suggests a transformative brand of genre-straddling. Matt Shipp, always a bold free-roamer, made a sharp, summary set with his Trio. (His prepared piano swing on ?Stage 10? is a killer.) I loved Vijay Iyer?s Accelerando, with its Michael Jackson and Flying Lotus covers. But he impressed me most last year at a live gig with a song dedicated to Detroit techno pioneer Robert Hood, which reminded why, rhythmically and otherwise, he and his Trio are one of the most thrilling units in jazz. (For more thoughts on the music, I refer readers to the annual Music Club-style exchange at critic Nate Chinen?s blog.)

I sense all this polyglotism, in jazz and elsewhere, is partly a generational shift but also an economic imperative. Following certain musicians sometimes reminds me of those old In Living Color skits where the West Indian guy asks ?How many jobs you got, mon?? I always keep an eye out for work by Nico Muhly, Rob Moose, and Gabriel Kahane, young ?classical? musicians and composers who have parallel lives in the pop and indie-rock worlds. The temples of high culture continue to tap the interests of their increasingly post-boomer audiences?see programs at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (which has invited John Cale to curate a tribute to that other musical Nico next month), The Walker Art Center (which booked drone-metal mystics Sunno))) a while back), Mass-MOCA (where I saw the premiere of David Byrne?s immersively fabulous musical Here Lies Love last June), etc. So I expect we?ll see more of this hybridity as musicians make their nut with a combination of institutional grants, nightclub gigs, and whatever other opportunities arise.

This may include playing more small, unconventional venues. I saw Montreal?s Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who released a moving set of Olympian drone-rock after an eight-year absence, deliver an inspiring set in a gutted glue factory in Hudson, N.Y., owned by former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur and her partner, Tony Stone. It felt a bit like one of the map-point raves I?d attend in the Midwest and elsewhere in the ?90s, not quite off-the-grid musical happenings convened flash-mob style outside of major urban centers. But this was less illegal, more community-centric artisanal distillery than moonshine speakeasy. As gas prices make cross-country tours prohibitively expensive for smaller outfits, interstitial venues like this can make regional tours a more viable option and help spur local scenes, too.?

A few more scattershot points. I feel you, Ann, on the rich year for Americana and the Alabama Shakes, who you in fact first alerted me to. Along with your call-outs, I wanted to give props to Kin by Rodney Crowell and moonlighting poet-memoirist Mary Karr, a set both dark and remarkably fun, with (as you might guess) top-shelf lyrics delivered by an all-star cast: Lee Ann Womack, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and others. Iowa Writers Workshop grad/Nashville dropout Kevin Gordon also turned out a great record, highlighted by a 10-minute masterpiece of storytelling whose race-themed narrative resonated deeply in the wake of Obama?s re-election.

Maybe it was because extended compositions were so common in 2012?from the aforementioned epics by Swans and Godspeed, to Neil Young?s near-30-minute ?Driftin? Back,? to seamless art-metal LPs by Krallice and Pallbearer?that for me, the four-plus uninterrupted hours of Robert Wilson and Philip Glass? Einstein On The Beach, revived this year on stages in New York and Berkeley, seemed to fly by. It was a rare opportunity to unitask, to shut off the cellphone data flow for a long stretch (for those up to the challenge) and meditate on art. That was one great irony of music in 2012: As much as it was a symptom of the data deluge, with the flood of availability, it could also be an essential refuge from it.

Refuge was hard to come by in the wake of Newtown earlier this month, and it made me think anew about pop?s gun lust. Like, say, that Katy Perry video. Get your heart broken? Pick up an M-16 and find your inner strength. Sure, it?s a reductive reading, I need a sense of humor, I do support our troops, pop-music fantasies are cultural release valves, blah fucking blah. But I?m a pop critic co-raising an 11-year-old daughter to be strong and safe, and I?m a bit on edge.

To be clear: I?m not for restrictions on musical expression, just weapons. There?s no denying the emotional potency of Charli XCX announcing ?I wanna shoot you in the fuckin? face? on the ?Kill Bill? section of her remarkable mixtape?thanks for the heads up, Lindsay. But it?s relevant that she?s slinging her metaphor in a country with strict gun-control laws. (A recent essay on women and guns in these virtual pages by my sometimes pro-gun friend Porochista Khakpour is food for thought on all this.)?

I?m not always a poptimist, but I remain an optimist. Music, in one form or another, never fails me. Like many critics, professional and otherwise, I savor the dialogs with my fellow obsessives on Facebook, Twitter, and various other outlets during the course of the year. So it?s wonderful to have a forum like this to recap and reflect with y?all. Have a beautiful and safe 2013.

(AP) ? Former Atlanta Braves star center fielder Andruw Jones was free on bond after being arrested in suburban Atlanta early Tuesday on a battery charge, according to jail records.

Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call for a domestic dispute between Jones and his wife in Duluth.

Gwinnett County Detention Center records say Jones was booked into the jail around 3:45 a.m. and had been released on $2,400 bond by 11 a.m.

Once one of the premier players in the big leagues, Jones broke into the majors with the Atlanta Braves in 1996 and won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1998-07 as their center fielder. He has 434 career home runs over the span of 17 seasons in the majors.

Jones earlier this month signed a $3.5 million, one-year contract with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan's Pacific League.

Auto Insurance Can Help Cover The Cost Of The Car | Investing ...

Many people believe it is hard to learn about auto insurance. Truthfully, the more things you know causes it to be less confusing, just like anything in life.

You should always maintain records of all the insurance bills you have paid. Having proof that you have paid your insurance can save you problems, especially if you receive a ticket.

When purchasing car insurance, get quotes from multiple carriers. Each company can offer you a different rate. You should shop you auto insurance at least once a year to guarantee you are receiving the best rates. Make sure these quotes are for a similar amount of coverage when you?re comparing rates.

Most insurance providers give discounts to people whose yearly mileage is under 7500. Reducing the amount you drive is ideal for saving on car insurance.

You may be confused about how much coverage you need to carry. If you have a lot of assets, you should get enough liability insurance to secure them. If you are carrying $50,000 of coverage on bodily injury and have way more than that in personal assets, you can be liable to cover the difference if you are the party at fault in the accident. In the long run, having all the coverage you need will will pay off.

The less a person drives, the less they should pay for insurance; look into low mileage discounts. In most cases, it is necessary to tally no more than 7,500 miles annually in order to secure this type of price break. You may also qualify for a commuter rebate by taking public transit to work instead of driving.

You can lower your insurance premium considerably by choosing the highest deductible offered. A higher deductible means you will end up having to pay for any small costs that come up, but you are still protected in the case of total loss or any liability.
