Google MapsGL updates 3D buildings, improves virtual tourism

Google's been spending some quality time with its Maps offering of late. Most recently, it overhauled the 3D buildings and landmarks to make them, well, better. This time, its Maps' juiced up sibling MapsGL that's been feeling the paternal love. The WebGL-based 3D renderings have been the same treatment, making your virtual aerial tours all the more realistic. Now, as you glide over the landscape, your view of the buildings is much more like real life. Or you could just take the lazy tourism one step further. Hit the source for examples.

A Run Down Of The Mobile Startups At MLove, Monterey

MLOVE is a European mobile conference with a difference. If a mobile conference was crossed with TED and a music festival, that's vaguely like MLove. Its big annual event is in an old East German castle 200 miles outside of Berlin. Yes, it's as exotic as it sounds. But this week it took the plunge and brought its special atmosphere to Monterey. Amid the excellent speeches about the future of mobile, and the future generally, organiser Harald Neidhardt throws together a diverse range of speakers, from Grammy Award winning Musician Chamillionaire to "CameraGirl", who runs tech at Burning Man. As one delegate, Dr. Robert Daubner of billiger, put it to me, "mobile is poised to disrupt the world." Never were truer words spoken... Amid the high concept presentations from the likes of the Singularity University and others were a number of startup pitches from U.S.-based startups. Here's a run-down on those:

(Founder Stories) Send The Trend?s Gugnani & Chris Dixon Discuss M&A

In episode II of Divya Gugnani's Founder Stories interview with host Chris Dixon, the two dive into M&A, a topic that both founders know well. Dixon's company Hunch, was recently acquired by eBay and Gugnani's company, Send The Trend was recently acquired by QVC. On being acquired, Gugnani tells Dixon that she was approached much earlier than she had anticipated and it was a "really intimidating and scary" experience. She adds, "there were really two directions; do I go down this route and potentially distract myself from the base business that is growing ... or do I just keep focusing on my business and have that kind of bravado that you know what, it is going to be worth so much more later?"

Congress to examine government's dominance in wireless spectrum

The US federal government is, by far and away, the largest user of wireless spectrum in the States -- much of which is spoken for by the Department of Defense. A new Congressional committee will, however, be re-examining that position with the goal of freeing up airwaves for public and commercial use. Brett Guthrie (R-KY), who will co-chair the group, hopes the effort will ultimately end up saving taxpayers money and satiating the country's "exploding demand for mobile broadband services." Of course this isn't the first time the idea has been broached, but the bi-partisan collective suggests that an actionable plan to ease the spectrum squeeze might not be too far off. Let's all hope that the findings don't become quite as contentious as some of the other issues currently being debated in Congress's hallowed halls.

Hacker Jailed For Stealing Facebook?s Source Code Tells All, Claims Innocence

He stole Facebook's source code, but never copied, published, or sold it. Then he was arrested and imprisoned. Now released after four months in jail, Glenn Steven Mangham claims he's an innocent white hat hacker who was trying to help Facebook patch security vulnerabilities in a video and blog post published this week. However, Facebook responded to my request for a statement about the 26-year old's claims with "Mr.Mangham's excuses have already been evaluated and rejected by a court of law, resulting in his conviction and jail time." Mangham says he planned to inform Facebook of the vulnerabilities, and could have entered Facebook's White Hat program that offers security researchers protection against legal repercussions. However,?Mangham was arrest after?possessing the source code for three weeks without informing Facebook. ?Is he telling the truth, or lying through his teeth?

PSA: Nintendo 3DS firmware update now live in North America

If your 3DS' home screen is looking a little too cluttered, then today's your lucky day. Nintendo is rolling out the firmware update that adds folders to your folder. (You've gotta fold the console closed, geddit?) The only other change evident so far is a redesigned eShop interface that makes better use of the screen's real estate, but pssh, who cares? It's all about the folders for us.

Sprint adds 263,000 subscribers, posts $255 million operating loss, watches LTE start to flicker on

Sprint this morning announced its Q1 2012 earnings. The big strokes are that it added 263,000 postpaid subscribers but posted a $255 million operating loss. (A little less than half of that was for in operating costs for its new "Network Vision" strategy. You have to spend money to make money.)

Sprint now boasts more than 56 million customers (32.8 million postpaid, and 15.3 million prepaid. Churn was up slightly at 2 percent. 

And, yes, Sprint sold some iPhones -- some 1.5 million.

What we're really interested in, of course, is Sprint's LTE rollout. It's still set to have six LTE cities running by  mid-year, and more than 12,000 sites (different than citites) by the end of the year.
